Best England player at the World Cup?

I think it comes down to a choice between Cole and Gerrard.

Cole didn't do much wrong, but didn't do a great deal going forward for a player of his attacking qualities.

Gerrard was our best attacking player despite being played in a position he really doesn't like or allows him to influence the game enough. Despite the criticisms on here his long range passing was excellent and he was at the heart of pretty much everything we did on the oppositions 18 yard line.

For me it's a close one to call, especially as both players were stitched up a bit by the managers selections, but if I had to choose one I'd probably just about go for Gerrard.

Probably scared to, in fairness. Knowing that the rest of the back four was less than convincing, he'd have had to think twice any time he crossed the half-way line.

Gerrard for me. England's defence was woeful against Germany so even if on detailed analysis Cole was not in fault in any way I still wouldn't be inclined to vote for him. Didn't offer enough going forward either - although I think that was as much down to the whole team and tactics than him individually.

Gerrard played at least moderately well in every game and had some great chances, most of which were well saved unfortunately.

Gerrard wandered in field so much that Cole had to bust his arse legging it up and down the left flank. Would've done more going forward if he'd had eg. J. Cole in front of him.

Not that this is a criticism of Gerrard who had an okay tourney. Cole though looked solid defensively and generally at home on the world stage.

best of a bad bunch would have to be ashley cole. he didn't do much, but he didn't make any mistakes from what i can remember. he also had to do two jobs down the left most the time, and did it well.
