I look forward to seeing how non political the England Argentina game would be if the Argentinians wore a commemorative symbol for all those who died in the battle for Las Malvinhas.

Providing there is a well established charitable organisation in place to honour the dead and assist the wounded I really can't see the issue.

no nor can I. It's just all the reactionary dickheads that go to football matches that are the problem. Hence FIFAs stance.

Developments on this today - Cameron has got involved and sent a letter to FIFA. But as he says that poppy is "a symbol of national pride" he's played right into FIFA's hands.

Oh, and two members of the EDL are on the roof of FIFA HQ in Zurich.

Have to say I'm with FIFA on this. Wearing a poppy is a personal choice and should not be compulsory, also what a waste in producing a specific set of shirts just to have a poppy on them. It's not really got a place on a football shirt IMO.

Cameron can feck off.

Poppies allowed to be displayed on the armbands. Great work Cameron, good to see someone full of respect.

Why don't they just wear them? Why are they so scared? What are FIFA going to do if we went against them.

Correct. It's amazing how this Daily Mail bandwagon has got such momentum and spiralled out of control so much in just a couple of days.

I was more amused at how FIFA would call of a match because of the wearing of a poppy.

Fair play on FIFA for agreeing a reasonable compromise under a rabid whirlwind of ill-considered indignation.
