I've just read an article on BBC that suggested that no decision would be made until Thursday due to Cappello being away. :|

Unless it wrote in braille(sp?), Spaccstic can't read it.

Wayne Rooney 7/1 to be next England captain, massive price so jumped on it, however after thinking about it, the only person i would want to be captain less than him is Lampard, bit too early perhaps for Rooney. Gareth Barry is a possible shout, but apart from from him or Gerrard, not really sure who could do the job.

What's with all this role model crap?
When you are a kid you copy what players do ON the pitch not off it.
Do people think that 8 year-old kids will go round trying to S...their mates' sisters or Junior School girlfriends because of what Terry has been doing?

If we have to have a captain-how necessary is that these days with all tactical decisions taken off the pitch?-a forward is pointless and it has to be a defender or midfielder who can see the game ahead of him.
What on earth would Rooney bring to the captaincy?

John Terry will still be a solid defender whether he remains as captain or not and do we really need all those crass interviews with inarticulate captains that the media brings to us these days?
It's bad enough listening to the nonsense spouted by managers who can hardly speak English and that's just the English ones.

BTW didn't I read that Bridge let Terry use his house to knock off some other bird?
Maybe Bridge is not as upset as we are led to believe.

Who would you like to replace the adulterer Terry? How about Rooney who shags grannny prostitutes? Or Gerrard who gets into fights with DJ? Or that lovely moral chap Ashley Cole?

If there was one of them who was a role model then teh argument might hold some water, but they're all as bad as each other in one way or another.

A possible dilemma for the FA / Capello. That is if they choose it to be so. Capello could take the tough decision to not take Terry to the world cup and possibly lose a vital cog and the experience. He could also take a consensus from the team but as this will shift the focus and decision making to the team it could be a bad move. Capello has removed the individual focus to a greater team performance so it will be interesting to see how this is handled.

Well tbf to Rooney, he was young and naive when it happened. The lad has matured unbelievably over the past couple of years, and fatherhood should add to that maturity.

lol, this is it.....im on ignore yet always seem to get a reply out of him

Back on topic, remember we've got a world cup bid coming up and the England captain will be required to be good ambassador, yes Rooney shagged a granny but that was years ago - in the recent public eye he is very mature and handles himself well. Remember Beckham was a cock before he became England captain - now he's regarded as one of our all time best skippers.

TBM,what planet are you on?
Beckham regarded as one of our all time best skippers?
He may be at your local youff club but get real.
We don't need an ambassador-the manager can do whatever talking is necessary and his English is now better than most of the players in the squad already.

:? have you actually been reading this thread or did you just want to do your usual shite and fly in with the abuse?!

Why do you think Beckham is used at the forefront of everything to do with England?
Why do kids growing up today love him so much?
Why do all the other (English) players out there have so much respect for him?
Why was he England captain for so long if he was shit?

Being England captain isn't the same as being a captain at club level, the FA love to have somebody who can bring players together, gets on well with the media and that the fans adore............

The only reason Beckham is in the England squad now and will probably be at the World Cup is because he brings a certain aura to the team that boosts moral and is an idol for many youngsters out there - something i cant see John Terry doing. Wayne Rooney seems to be developing into that Beckham mould and its only good for England and the kids out there to idolise.

I don't want to go all Frimmers on you TBM, but a lot of your questions can be answered with the same thing, the power of the media and managing your PR well.

There's no doubt that he has a certain aura and presence about him though, and he's now become a marketing/PR mans dream so he is a very powerful figure, but I don't think that really makes him one of our all time great captains. He manufactured that image for himself, with a lot of help from Sven who bought into the whole celebrity England squad far too much for the teams good, and it's now set a bit of a rod for future captains.

I think a captain is an important figurehead within a team, and the squad, and the media, but not quite as much as is made out these days.

See i disagree, not with what you say cos thats true but the fact people dont see him as a good England captain.....i know he's not a "leader" like Bobby Moore but to me being England captain is all about influencing what happens on the pitch - if your captain is well respected, liked by all (most), a talented footballer, and always puts in 100% then it raises the game of everyone around them. You cant have somebody on the pitch leading the team if they're a bit of a twat (on and off it) cos they wont have the same influence on the players as someone like Beckham, Robson, Moore etc had.

I agree, and I do think a captain has an important role within the squad, but I think the Sven/Beckham/Media powerful era has blown it all out of proportion.

I agree that the captain should be liked and respected amongst his team too, and as I said, Beckham probably was and his sheer presence which set him apart in many ways.

I agree he was a good captain, because he would lead by example and was a good role model most of the time, and one of out better players. I just think he was also very lucky to be in the side at times (often to the detriment of the side because of his image and position as captain) and very lucky (and well advised/pushed by his wife) to be captain at a time when celebrity and the media were so powerful.

Good but not great I'd say.
