Stooper When Gareth Thomas came out, most of the Rugby community reacted with "So what?"

If an international footballer came out, expect terrace chants aplenty, a la Sol. Hence the segregation.....much as I love football, the small-minded mentality of some fans give it a bad name. And it ain't gonna change anytime soon.

They said that about racism in the 80s, and what really changed it wasn't actually any campaigns like Kick It Out or Show Racism the Red Card etc.

It was that society changed and it simply became unacceptable to the vast majority of other people in the stands. Those who did it trying to look big suddenly realised that they weren't getting the kudos they expected - instead they were getting the exact opposite. These days there's largely "self-policing" against racism in most stands.

Whether public opinion has change enough for the same to happen with homophobia is another thing - certainly in mainstream society being gay is perfectly acceptable (*) but I do wonder if it will take a player coming out to change things. The ideal would be for a number to come out - statistically there are several at every club, so if they came out en masse I'm sure that would change everything.

(*) With the exception of little boys worried about their own sexuality.

players get grief from oppo fans anyway- for what ever we can think of, will a gay chant really upset them?

"xxxx takes it up the A*se" "yes, yes i do."
"does your boyfriend know youre here" "of course he does, hes just baking a carrot cake for when i get back"

etc etc

I think if a number of players came out, that would certainly help shut up those idiots who still think being gay is humourous and/or unacceptable. But what are the chances that they will, while footballing show they don't have the guts for it?

Why shouldn't someone find homosexuality a bit 'wrong' or unacceptable?

I don't think it's fair or right to descriminate against those that are gay, but I also don't think it's right that a society deems it wrong for an individual to make their own mind up about a lifestyle choice and how they view it.

they're allowed to find it that - what they're not allowed to do is abuse people or discriminate against them because of it.

Which is what I said Dirk!

Bobs inference was that it's wrong for people to have their own opinion on gay being humerous or unacceptable.

i love the gays, i want them to be free to just live as they wish, and am hugely pleased at the transormation in this country of the consensus attitude towards my rainbow brothers
i just dont see why they should be somehow exempt from the huge chunk of comedy that stems from the differences between people

"disasterous" is a very judgemental word (even more so when it's spelt properly). Who are you to say whether it's a disaster or not?

From a monkey, obviously.

I was wondering if Iniesta was a bummer actually - had my suspicions about him and also Robben for a while. Mebbe it's just that kind of emaciated bald look that makes me think it.
