Royal Rother Owning? With respect (and only if you can bear too - I don't think I could actually) you need to have another read I think.

Frimmers started off talking about the World Cup and then included the FA Cup. Then nonsense point-scoring ensued.

Would anyone disagree that they are no longer as important to either footballers or fans as they used to be?

What makes you say that RR?

Probably an arrogant conclusion on my part tbf - but they are for me anyway, and obviously for Frimmers too.

It's probably an age thing. Whippersnappers haven't seen as many as we have, and anyway, as time speeds up they seem to come around every few months now so are nowt special these days. Bit sad really I suppose. For us.

Having said that I do not believe for a moment that representing England in a World Cup gives as much of a rush to today's millionaire footballers as it did 20+++ years ago.

Probably more of an insight into growing old than the WC then.

I do enjoy these 'in the good old day' debates always offered by the older generations....for me its just a rather generic, inevitable argument designed to subconsciously disempower the younger generations.

But the younger generations don't appreciate how good it used to be - perhaps you should take our word for it!

When there wasn't much money in the game, and it wasn't on the TV every day of the week, and nobody heard of even the Brazilian players from one WC to the next, the whole thing was inevitably more exciting to the fans.

But before I went off musing about the ageing process the point you actually questioned me on was why I felt that neither the WC or the FAC were as important to the fans and the players as they used to be.

The answer's in the above really - money, TV saturation and the old Club -v- Country scenario.

Do you think they ARE as important as ever?

^ Agree with a lot of the above. In days gone by you would get to see top South American and even some of the best European players "live" for the first time at a World Cup. it added to the occasion. Now you can see these players every week on your tv screen in the Champions League. It dilutes the World Cup.
Having said that the past few World Cups have been dire. The expansion of the tournament to 32 countries has made matters worse with the group stages a bore-fest. The authorities need to re-jig this part of the tournament. Perhaps they could award a point for each goal scored by a team in the group stages in addition to the current points system. They need to encourage attacking play not hinder it.

frimmers3 my point stands. the f'a cup is no longer the spectacle it once was.

have another try. this is what i wrote with regard to both competitions, and expanded upon later.

"pales with regard to the ryder cup..not even third in my book..the world cup is like the f.a cup...no one really gives a toss about it now..time was when england came to a standstill to watch the unfolding events at wembley...no longer."

if you are going to trip up frimmers, you will need to do a lot better...

seems a few agree with me...
