papereyes What's funny/interesting/neither is that its pretty much the complete opposite of the system the new Liverpool owners are trying to implement back in their baseball franchise.

Yep, paying $50M just for the right to talk terms with Dice-K showed incredible frugality

The red Sox spend money on a scale only rivalled by the Yankees

... and it was only after importing the 'moneyball' system that they actually won something ... ?

Well, they started using sabermetrics and brought Bill James (and sabermetrician Theo eopstein) into the front office but they also spent loads of money, separating them from oakland's system

But Oaklands system wasn't simply 'let's not spend much money'. That was enforced on them by them being small.

The whole point of Moneyball/Billy Beane's system is that they found a way to see if players were over- and under- valued.

rhroyal Andy Carroll is supposedly worth more than David Villa, Carlos Tevez and 4 Rafael Van Der Vaarts. Give up on this one Liverpool.

Didn't Tevez join Man City for about £45M?

I know Berbatov to Man Utd is still the record over here, which was about £30.5million. Here's Tevez's details.

What I find hilarious about Carroll is that he has performed for half a season in the Premiership. he undoubtedly has potential, but so many players do and flop. Andy Johnson and James Beattie were as proven as Andy Carroll in the early stages of their careers. £35million.

At long last, I can give you an update on Fernando Torres' switch to Chelsea. Well, an explanation on why it hasn't progressed for the last few hours. BBC Sport understands that the delay with the deal is down to a hitch in negotiations about the mechanics of his Stamford Bridge contract, concerning image rights etc

I believed that at a later date it was 'revieved' that it was actually much more than that.

So, let me get this rumour straight.

Liverpool bid £35,000,000 for Carroll, and Newcastle have REJECTED it ?????

My memory is the opposite. It was claimed it was £40 million plus, and then revised downwards.

Newcastle dont need to sell, and with the window shutting very soon they are hoping Liverpool will suddenly up it another few million.....Newcastle can see £50m coming in from Torres and want as much as it as possible.

BUT this has just been posted

Carroll flying to Merseyside on private jet that was sent to the North East to collect him by LFC. Deal very much on

This HAS to be a red herring, shirley?

Scenario - Liverpool have managed to get Chelsea to spend £50m on Torres. As much of an asset to Liverpool as Torres is, that's a huge deal. £50m.

To then spend two thirds of that on Andy Carroll would be nothing short of disgraceful.

£35m could buy them a decent centre half and winger.....something i feel Liverpool need more than Carroll

Newcastle must have a lot of faith that Liverpool will return with a higher and yet more ridiculous bid. Otherwise turning down £35million for Carroll is utterly ridiculous and I imagine they could well regret it at a later date.

His goals keeping them in the Premiership could, to them, be worth more........

I suppose I'm assuming that Newcastle will be safe but if they really are worried about their safety I can see it a little more. Maybe they're also thinking of letting him go in the summer and having more time to use the funds to strengthen elsewhere.
