One of my criticisms of Dalglish would be that Downing has hardly played on the left, he's usually be put on the right which stops him doing what he does best.

He's not had a good season no, but doubt there's been too many instances of him on the left and Carroll upfront. His poor assist record is more to do with Liverpools failure in front of goal than Downings ability to put the ball in the right areas from the left.

I wouldn't see him as a starter, but as an option off the bench I could understand the logic.

Ruddy, just isn't International class, and well Milner, doesn't offer much tbh, much prefer Johnson or Lennon to get a spot ahead of him.
