Best ever Football League Manager

by Seal » 13 Oct 2010 12:09

Neil Warnock has just won the Championship Manager of the Month award for the second consecutive month, and as a result we were just debating in the office who is the best Football League manager of all time.

I was obviously pushing Coppell hard, but apart from his success at Reading, his best spell was in Division 1 / the Prem.

Warnock has 6 promotions to his name. Is there anyone else who can compete....or is he the best there as been outside the top flight?

Brendan Rodgers. He has a World Class Model, a big book of football AND..... he has Jose's ear.

Basset had a pretty good record of winning promotions didn't he?

I'm not sure that's the best measure of success though. Being a good manager is all about getting the best out of your resources, eg Coppell getting us up to 8th in the Premiership was better than Liverpool finishing 4th.

Dario Gradi has to come close to the best ever manager because he consistently produced competitive teams on a shoestring budget and turned out some cracking players.

Warnock has spent very little, he will be the greatest football manager ever, if come May, QPR are in the Prem.

That's what I was thinking, as technically Division 1 back then was in the Football League.

Warnock isn't fit to lick Cloughie's mouldy old ring.

Yes but by using the term Football League I am, referring to non top flight football. Now known as the Football League....pre 92 divisions 2,3 and 4.

So Gradi is a good shout. Any others?

Tredder Warnock has spent very little, he will be the greatest football manager ever, if come May, QPR are in the Prem.

Any manager who can convince Tredder two attend more than two QPR games a season must have the midas touch.

I have to remember to turn that webcam off, watching Hampton qualifies as a QPR game as well, cos i'm out, watching football, so it could be QPR, it just isn't.

Good shout for Clough. To take one side up (Derby) from the second level and win the League Championship was good enough, but to do it TWICE (Forest) borders on the miraculous.

My vote goes to the last manager to do it before him: Alf Ramsey with Ipswich in 61/62. As he took over when they were in the Third Division South in 1955 and ended up winning the World Cup with England, he deserves a shout as well.
