Just goes to show that we must really be in bad shape to consider someone of Jay Bothroyd's ability. Just out of interest, what are the other options available to England? Sadly Shane Long is Irish..

I'd have given Kenwyne Jones a shot before Bothroyd.

Shame he plays for Trinidad and Tobago, or I'd agree!

Well,.......................

I have gobbed off to anybody that would listen (most dont) that The England manager should look outside of the Prem for some his key players.

As much as I dislike Bothroyd

I hope he gets the gig

Why the hell is Bothroyd in ahead of Davies? He's in the form of his life and I thought he did ok on his debut.

Still don't understand Nolan's absence or what Richards and Smalling have done to deserve a call up either. Clearly, sitting on the bench all season is enough these days

If you had any common sense, you can tell that he wants to find YOUNG players for the future squad. They may not be the best right now, but in a year or twos time, they will be all we have.

Exactly, he's using the friendly to take an up close and personal look at a few alternatives and see how they get on in the squad.

Some of these are players who've done well in the U21s and are possibly our future mainstays (Smalling and Cahill could be the next Terry & Ferdinand) and so it's well worth checking them out. Richards has played a fair bit for City, and I still think he has the ability and attributes to be the right back ahead of Johnson who's looked poor since the build up to the World Cup.

Bothroyd has been playing very well, and is footballing big lump who could be a brilliant foil for Rooney, although I'm not sure I'd agree that he's quite good enough but we havent seen enough of him up against top draw defences as yet.

You are joking aren't you?
With Bothroyd you can see why Arsenal took him on as a youngster with his first touch being excellent.
Don't forget he played in Serie A,something that English players rarely do.
He has a temperament problem but that seems to be a plus to get a game up front for England (Rooney,Carroll).
I think he has more going for him than Carlton Cole and Heskey who both have played there in recent years and of course he is a top rate diver, something that appears essential for Premier League and International football.

I would go as far as to say Bothroyd was by far the best player in the league last season and has continued that form into this season. We saw how much Cardiff missed him against Swansea and that's with Chopra and Bellamy in the side.

As other have alluded, the public and press have hammered England managers for not using friendly's to experiment and then you have the likes of Alan Greene calling Fabio and idiot for selecting Cole over Davies.

I like Davies, but you know he can do a job in the short term, use these games to see who might do a job for the future.
