AthleticoSpizz anybody know anything much about our local ladies team?

I don't but would be interested to know about them especially as they are doing so well.

Apologies to officianados of ladies football because I have never really bothered to check very much on ladies football and only see the occasional snippet therefore I suspect I am way out of date but ....

I thought there were two ladies teams in Reading, Reading Royals and Reading Ladies. Did the two Clubs merge ? I think one used to play at Reading Town but I don't know which one.

The last I remember about the Reading Royals team was that they were complaining because they were in one of the regional leagues and had been put in the Northern Section. They were threatening to disband if they didn't get put into the Southern Section.

Thirdly on the very rare occasions I saw a league table with the Royals in it they were never very high up. I may well have missed an entire season but does anyone know how they got in the Premier League ?

Finally I thought the top ladies teams included Arsenal, Fulham, Everton and the Doncaster Belles. Are all these teams disbanded now or do they play in another league ?

I know I could research this on the Internet somewhere but would be interested to read a posting from someone who could explain these things.

Cheers Elmer (and Ian)

Like you, I assumed that the Doncaster Belles and the Arsenals were the queens of the footy world.

Maybe they are in some kind've elite league somewhere.........however, it would be good to see our girlies getting some kind've local (if not national) recognition, regardless

There is the women's superleague starting next year for Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal etc.

Don't know whether Reading Royals applied to be in it or not. I suspect not, as they weren't in the Prem last season. Forest were, applied, but didnt get in. Don't know why though - my contact for them now plays for Leeds.

So basically, Premier league for women, isn't the top league (or at least won't be). Everton, Arsenal etc have been playing in Europe this season, but don't know how that will work next season - seems they have a year off league football which is a bit odd. Preparation for superleague perhaps?

Basic pyramid (as far as I know)

Super League (from 2011)
Premier League
Northern/Southern Premier
Regional combination leagues
etc etc

Thanx Suse

I naturaly assumed "Premier" meant top flight ( but seeing the lack of Arsenal and Doncaster I thought otherwise).

Seeing female referees officiate most of my boys Saturday games better than most of their male counterparts, I have only the greatest respect for the girlie game.

Thanks Suse for explaining the situation. Although it seems our girls team are just below the elite league of women's football they are still playing at a very high level and it is good to see them doing well.

Shame they don't play their home games in Reading or at least in Berkshire though. I am sure there is a good reason but it would be nice if they could play at Reading Town or Woodley Town or even at Hogwood.

I know this is General Football but surely wimmin's football is pushing the boundary of even that very broad definition -

Are the women not worthy of being in The Team forum?
