Why Chelsea aren't a big club

by Barry the bird boggler » 16 May 2011 07:23

All glory hunters, Newcastle get a late equaliser and two thirds of the ground empties leaving the players to a lap of appreciation more or less by themselves. Would that happen at United or Liverpool - I think not.

That's nothing to do with Chelsea being a "big club" - it's more to do with modern day football fans.

Would I stay for a lap of honour after conceding a late equaliser? I didn't even stay when we beat Derby

Why wouldn't you? You usually stay behind to show your appreciation to the players for the season, not that one particular game!
As you say, "modern fans"...!!

Although technically Derby wasn't our last home game of the season so you could be forgiven that

'gree with BFers, I was gone as soon as the Derby game was over

Why would I want to spend 20mins of my life applauding a load of thick chavs for playing half-arsed football for a year?

As much to do with so many wanting to beat the traffic and queues everythere. Something that I could never quite understand. Would anyone leave a cinema or theatre 5-10 minutes before the end? Only twice in the last 10 years have I left a game early. Last season v QPR after the nth hoof from Mills that sailed over Kebe's head. And that with more than 20 minutes to go. The other when we were 2-0 down at home to palarse and while walking back to the car they scoreed a third.

It's a shit analogy though - you don't leave a film early because you don't know how it ends.

If Reading are 3-0 down in injury time then I'd have to ask why on earth you'd stay?

You might miss the goal of the century, a brutal leg-breaking tackle, a mass fight, anything. It's not just the result, it's individual incidents that stick in the mind.

Alternatively, you can stay to the end because of sheer bloody-mindedness and the fact that it allows you to be superior on internet messages boards and say "I've never left early, you know....."

I'm with you on the staying behind to clap them.

And "lap of appreciation" - do me a favour?!?

But there's a mid-point between leaving early and staying to applaud - which is leaving the second the final whistle goes.

Hundreds, if not thousands, left the home game against Plymouth at 0-3. I never tire of reminding the ones I know.
(OK - I know it was 25 minutes, not injury time)

No, but it''s a fake. Any true replica would have had "Commodore" plastered all over the front. You were obviously too mentally retarded to know any different :D
