Promoted managers

by phil in cornwall » 02 Jun 2012 21:59

The three teams promoted in May 2011 have survived in the Premier League. In fact Swansea and Norwich did very well. All survived, which is unusual.

Of the managers who got them there, one was sacked and two have gone off to 'bigger' teams.

So none of them start the second season (syndrome??) with the manager who got them promoted.

We are feeling pretty good at the moment but how might we feel in a year or two when our manager and possibly our star player moves on?

I feel particularly sorry for Norwich and will buy a big pot of Colman's Mustard tomorrow.

Swansea and Norwich will be in trouble now and that can only be good for our survival. Their pain our gain and as always in football it will also happen to us but right now I don't give a damn!

JR will be too old to 'move on' - retire maybe.

I'm not that concerned really - Swansea and Norwich both don't have much money and haven't got much potential, whereas we do plus McDermott has a lot of history at Reading which Rodgers, Lambert and Warnock didn't at their clubs comparatively. I think QPR will stay up as Hughes is a good manager, but the other two will go down next year.

Not worried at all. Unless a top 5 club came in for McDermott why would he want to leave? This isn't the usual newly promoted club hoping to survive, and then continue to survive against the odds every year. We are fortunate enough to be have a billionaire backer who screams ambition. That is what every manager wants; money to improve on what he has each year, seeing the infrastructure improve, the stadium expand etc.

If you look at Norwich for an example. They were brilliant last year, but like Reading under Sir John Madejski, they work to a tighter budget than many, and Lambert reportedly fell out with the board when he learned they wouldn't back him as much as he felt he needed in the transfer market, and that they were prepared to accept bids for Grant Holt.

Reading wouldn't be in that position next season if we stayed up. Instead the budgets could perhaps be increased again, the expansion of the east stand will begin, and all the other pieces of the puzzle ongoing in the background. All a manager wants is to see the club back him, allow him to keep his players, and be able to improve the squad every year. Luckily for us we appear to have that.

Agree. From a purely selfish point of view what's happened to Norwich & Swansea can only be a good thing for us this coming season.
