English players playing abroad

by TBM » 11 Jul 2012 15:23

Why don't we see many English players playing the likes of Italy, Spain, France, Germany.......?

We could all probably count on one (maybe two) hand the amount of International English players that have played in a foreign country (during their peak). Personally i think until this happens we won't see England win a major tournament - as our players struggle to play against the foreign style of football.

I suppose for many there's little need, especially given the general apathy towards the international game. If you can get oodles of cash in a country you're familiar with in one of the three best leagues in the world then why move?

Even the Championship now pays far more than the majority of foreign leagues so again if it comes down to going to say Portugal or having a year or two in the Championship then its less of a tough decision.

I'm not saying players wouldn't learn a hell of a lot for moving abroad but from a purely professional point of view there's very little incentive for an individual player to leave the country now.

One of the England U19s (Dier) actually plays in Portugal for Sporting I think it was.

As Waxy said, there's very little motivation for any of our players to go abroad when we have the top paying clubs in the world over here (bar two, maybe three).

Understand that but the foreign teams don't even seem to bid for the players...

Not sure if they do or don't to be honest.

There have always been rumours about interest from the top foreign clubs in the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Bale (not English but a product of our football system), Cole etc etc. I think I read a rumour recently about teams looking at Baines as well (Leighton that is not Dave).

Fact is though, most foreign clubs can't afford our players and so they probably don't show much of an interest.

We're also not the best travellers in the world. Apart from Waddle, Beckham and McManaman, and I think Owen to a lesser extent, have there been too many more genuine successes with our players going abroad (actually you could probably add Joe Cole to that list)? I don't think thats usually down to ability but just the difference in cultures and geography that often means our players don't settle. Might be a bit of a stereotype but it's got to play a part.

Why up root your family for a move abroad when you can get more money (most of the time) whilst staying at home.

^This.

I wonder how many teams in Italy or Spain were going "Damn - if only we had been quicker, WE might have got Andy Carroll for £35M!!!"

Bluntly, English players are over-priced and have too high expectations of their own worth to be of interest to too many European clubs.

Yeah, this really. Those of lesser intelligence in this country, such as watfordroyal, do not want to be experiencing any other cultures if at all possible.
