Raheem Sterling/young players

by cmonurz » 27 Aug 2012 15:53

Watching Raheem Sterling for Liverpool yesterday, not 18 until December, giving Toure a going over - made we wonder if we train this fearlessness and exuberance out of our young players. Reminded me of a young Walcott tearing up and down the pitch for Southampton.

Even players like Rooney seems to have the weight of a game on their shoulders some of the time - far removed from the kid who excited us with a wonder goal against Arsenal.

Is this just players maturing into more rounded footballers, perhaps a natural progression that means they become top class Premier League players for many years, and not one- or two-season wonders, or do we just train this athleticism and enthusiasm and skill out of our brightest young prospects?

I think the novelty of their style slowly disappears, either as it becomes more predictable - for both fans and defenders - or it is trained out of them, as coaches encourage them to mimic the proven way. Watching a player like Sterling, I think he's exciting because he doesn't even know what he's going to do next, let alone the defender or the fan watching. Watching a player like Hazard, we're amazed not because he's as 'exciting' and unpredictable, but instead because he's already so polished and better at what other players do. But Sterling has many years ahead of him, and we can hope the excitement sticks.

That's why Antonio looked exciting then failed to perform consistently in a Reading shirt. They seem to love him at SW so I guess they play more to his style.

This may have already been discussed but is it true that Sterling already has 2 kids, each with a different girl?

Rodgers also gave him a nice dressing down in training one day:

Seems like he has a bit of a bad attitude.

Oh Joy. He's just starting his footballing career, but has already figured out that he doesn't have to behave responsibly. This is another Gazza/Collymore in the making. Should make for a good 10-20 years of hilarity before he gets sectioned under the mental health act or needs a liver transplant like George Best.

shirley you can do better than that...he's a brother with an islamic sounding name

Ideal Nah, if I commented on his religion Ian Royal would come along and smash Victor Meldrew up the rearend until they both collapsed in spastic ecstasy.

I'll just leave that kind of speculation up to you, maybe he's not even muslim.

He is Jamaican so more than likely he is not

"I have got to say I have seen a lot of development in him in a short time. He takes on a lot of the concepts and he is very good with instructions. Normally wingers want to do their own thing but, tactically, he is improving every day. I am certain over the next few years that he will develop into a very good footballer. We just have to make sure that we keep the pressure off him. I believe that if we can help and nurture him in the right way, he will be a very good player for Liverpool.

Perhaps he did, but seems to be responding to Rodgers.

Good clip. Rodgers is obviously very much at home dealing with the youngsters coming through - doubt that approach would win him many friends with the established 1st teamers but it's good to see him in action as it were.

Apologies GreaterTorontoRoyal.

I like Roger's style. I read today that Fergie banned the Man United players under 23 years of age from choosing a sports car (corvette) from their new sponsors, Chevrolet. They still get a car, just not a sports car. Seems to be Fergie's way of stopping them getting too big for their boots.

Thing is with Sterling - if he gets as good as Worral Sterling, he'll leave Liverpool like all there best players do.
