Newport >>>> Aldersh*t

by grey_squirrel » 07 May 2013 19:03

May I be the first to welcome Newport back into the Football League after 25 years absence.

Reason? Because I still have very fond memories of 12 October 1985 at Somerton Park!

On a serious note, another club whose Council deserted them; were forced to play in England if my memory serves to avoid having to compete in the Welsh League for many seasons; were reincarnated with fans money and despite many other ground moves in recent years have got their act together to get promoted from a very very difficult league (comprising 13 ex-league clubs) against the odds.

And then there is our old friends, Aldersh*t. Relegated again and straight into adminstration. A shocking situation for a Club who went to the wall not 20 years ago. Lessons not being learned and all that. They deserve it.

Bit harsh on Aldershot there. They were doing great until a new owner came along, made promises he didn't keep and ruined the club. For all we know we could be in the midst of the same thing right now!

That's my point Sparta

Didn't a certain Spencer Trethewy (18 year old "property magnate" / Jail bird) do the same thing to them?

Once bitten.........

Still ,at least it looks like the boy has come good, according to Wiki.

Spencer Trethewy (now Day, Farnboro' manager I believe), did not cause the collapse of Aldershot, he merely made a financial rescue promise that he could never live up to iirc.

Was being polite Frimmers. Sorry. Relegated from the league for the first time (rather than being booted out/unable to fulfill fixtures).

Better?

My point remains.

Or at least excellerated it.

Missing my point.

Compared to Aldershot Newport had it really tough, particularly in the early years. Feel for Aldershot supporters finding themselves back up shit creek just 20 years after being able to relaunch as a new club with all the advantages of moving straight into a league-standard ground. Dean Holdsworth walked out to join them but Newport have now had the last laugh.

Anyway - I've some good memories of Newport in the 80's - including that magical day when 4,000 Royals took over Somerton Park. Proper football.

I'm from Newport and a big County Fan.

Been really sick lately and crawled to Wembley but couldn't jump around when we scored. Weird experience.

I love Reading, started watching when I couldn't afford the trip to Wales, but OH the ups and downs of being a Newport County fan.

Saw us win The Welsh Cup (I got beaten up by five Shrewsbury fans) and then we got into to Europe

I think we have the best record in Europe of any team ever

0-0 Away
4-0 Home
0-0 Away
6-0 Home
2-2 Away
0-1 Home (Quarter Final of the European Cup-Winners Cup v Carl Zeiss Jena, the eventual finalists

Undefeated away, just the one defeat and a 12-1 goal difference, and that was a Division 3 (old leagues) or "League 1" side

Those days we were ECSTATIC, what a side we had. Could we have known we'd miss promotion to the second tier
through one bad game, then be relegated the next, then drop into the Conference and then go bust? INCREDIBLE!

Jeez, the stuff I've been through for NCAFC.

Once walked 32 miles to raise a week's wages for the club
(Wore plastic shoes and nylon socks, couldn't walk properly for weeks)

Agreed to walk 40+ miles Newport to Merthyr but arrived two hours late had to RUN
to catch the group. I caught them 6 hours later. Couldn't walk for six weeks.

And then the crap when the Welsh FA wouldn't let is play in Wales and we moved to Moreton in the Marsh

The first game? Myself, my GF, my brother and a guy called Ron Hill RAN the 80 Miles from Newport
to Moreton (over two days) to raise money for charity. (The police were b@stards) and we made it
at 2:45 on the day, jogged on to the pitch to applause from the fans

Couldn't walk for six years.....

F-ck I'm near to tears here.

More financial troubles and I ran a short-story comp for two years, used to turn up once a fortnight
"Here, David, another £123 quid..." month on month on month..."

But it still wasn't enough. We were going under for a second time.

Started the idea of "Amber Army" aiming to get 500 fans to commit to £5 a week.

That is still going, but now "The Supporters Trust" and, and

WE ARE FOOTBALL LEAGE, WE ARE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

I feel so emotional, I could hug Ian Royal

I fear that Cheese (in his current location) is a little displaced right now, when it comes to football teams

No - I'm merely bored with your tedious and pointless arguments over an assertion that is completely and utterly irrelevant.

Aldershot are Aldershot. The same pointless nobodies go to the Rec' and sing their silly songs about Reading. Nothing has intrinsically changed.

Farnbourgh Town and Aldershot are both in administration.

A merger between both clubs make sense to me although the fans of both clubs would not like it.
