Countries You Have Watched A Football Match In

by Brum Royal » 29 Apr 2014 14:40

Inspired by Ourbororororororororos's posting from watching a game in Japan today, where have Nobbers watched matches outside of the English league? Which were the best/worst/interesting games or grounds?

I've seen games in
Ireland (Cork)
Italy (Inter Milan)
Spain (Real Madrid, Villareal, Barcelona)
Germany (Hertha Berlin)
Sweden (Assyriska - just outside Stockholm)
Portugal (Reading's preseason tour two summers back, saw the Sheff Wed game  )

The Swedish game was probably the most interesting, we were there on a stag do, and ended up going to see this team play as the top division were on an international break. The team was set up by the migrant Syrian population, and the ground would resemble something like Crewe - ie one massive stand, and three terraces round the rest of the ground.

I also enjoyed Villareal, which was a UEFA cup match on a driving tour of Spain a few years back. A good game, and it was when they were at the height of their powers three/four years ago, they demolished FC Twente 4-1. Nice ground, good atmosphere.

I once saw a game in Berwick on Boxing Day - anything to get out of my grandparents' house. It was about 2 degrees outside. It finished Berwick 0-0 Montrose.

Absolutely awful.

Seems a long way to go, but certainly preferable to Barnsley.

Russia vs England in 2007, England lost 2-1. Rooney unbelievable volley in front of a chaotic away end. My first England away game, loved it.
Austria vs England in 2007, drab match. Won 1-0, think Crouch scored - sacked it off at Half Time.
France vs England in 2008, lost 1-0 I think. Beckham's 100th cap - great experience
Germany vs England in 2008, won 2-1 - gr8 feeling to celebrate a winning goal in last 10 minutes surrounded by thousands of Germans in their end.
Spain vs England in 2009, lost 2-0. Difficult to get a ticket for.
Holland vs England in 2009 - 2-2 draw. One to remember.
Montenegro vs England in 2011 - 2-2 draw, climbed aboard a fence at front of the Montenegro end and sang along to GSTQ, got round of applause from the locals behind us rather than a shoeing.
Sweden vs England at Euro 2012 - absolute scenes, no words can describe the celebration for Welbeck's winner in front of us.
San Marino vs England in 2013 - watched from a grassy mount behind one of the goals. Won 8-0 or something ridiculous.
Montenegro vs England in 2013 - Drew 1-1 I think? Absolutely hammered from drinking vodka all day and game kicked off at 10pm local time - caught trying to get into home end, blagged I was Italian to get through at turnstile then turfed into the away end by English police.

Vfb Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund in 2013 - great game, Dortmund won 2-1 with a late Lewandowski goal to win it in front of me.
Borussia Dortmund vs Wolfsburg, April 2014. Dortmund won 2-1, best atmosphere I've ever experienced at a match.

Inter Zapresic vs Reading in Croatia, July 2010. Can't remember the score, we may have lost. Absolutely boiling hot day - local police had brought fire brigade with them because "they heard this is how to control English football fans"
NK Celje vs Reading in Slovenia, July 2010. Again, don't remember the score. Gang of locals tried fighting the police to get out of a bar to attack all 12 of us.
Portugal pre season tour 2012, whichever side we played when Ian Harte scored a great free kick. Don't remember much else.

Plus 4 trips to Cardiff (2-0 defeat at Ninian, 0-0, 3-0 win and 3-1 defeat at new ground) and 2 trips to Swansea (1-0 win in last ever FA Cup game at the Vetch & 1-0 defeat on a freezing New Years Day)

Can't add much beyond Wales, but have been to Turners Cross, 1-1 draw between Cork City & Nantes in the Intertoto Cup. Doyle scored for City that night. Also been there for an U21 game v England.

England
Wales (play off final)
Scotland (Elgin, Nairn County, Rangers, Scotland vs Denmark at Hampden)
Spain (Real Madrid)

Best own goal I've ever seen at Elgin when their captain confidently shouted 'Mine' before heading it straight into his own net. The keepers reaction was priceless.

Offered a haggis pie at Nairn.

Saw Rangers in a CL qualifier against Kaunas of Lithuania in which they were totally outplayed and lucky to get away with a draw, needless to say the locals weren't happy. They were even less happy when they lost the tie and the club were due to unveil their new 'European kit' the day after they went out.

Privileged to see the likes of Zidane, Ronaldo, Raul and err...Owen on the first visit to Madrid.
