Steven Gerrard charged with assault

by crossie » 29 Dec 2008 11:00

England and Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard has been arrested following an alleged assault.

The incident happened at about 0230 GMT at a pub in Southport. Six men were detained later in a nearby street.

The men, four from Huyton, one from Formby and one from Litherland, remain in police custody.

A 34-year-old man from Southport was taken to hospital with facial injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

The men from Huyton are aged 33, 31, 29 and 19. A 28-year-old from Formby and an 18-year-old from Litherland are also being questioned.

Gerrard, 28, is Liverpool captain and scored twice in his team's 5-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

Could be one of those allegations that get put about but nothing actually happens...he isn't a Joey Barton type.

I can imagine that one of his mates has chinned a bloke and the whole lot of them have got nicked.

Be surprised if Gerrard is the main culprit here.

Agree with our Watford supporter, Gerrard has more sense than to get heavily involved with something like this. He was probably present and therefore taken in for questioning, but I'd be surprised if it materialises to anything major.

It better not anyway as he's having a stormer for my fantasy team!

How funny would it be if he ended up getting 6 months inside for something like this?

It's not just scousers, it seems to be footballers in general.

Let's not just go down the usual route of 'all footballers are scum' please.

I'm always amazed how little bad press rugby players get for far worse acts of violence.

Lesley Vanikolo is currently on bail for GBH
Olly Barkey was very lucky to get off from a GBH charge last year.
Danny Grewcock has been in numerous scraps with the public over the years.
Trevor Brennan decked a fan in the crowd.

Somehow because it's deemed as more of a middle class sport, they don't seem to get the same bad press, but the working class footballer is always guilty before being proven innocent.

I'd be pretty surprised if anything comes of this.

Something else that Gerrard's done that Lampard hasn't.

I think it's more to do with the fact that rugby pretty much keeps itself to it's itself and the players dont generally court the celebrity lifestyle in the same way.

Throw in the fact that not many people are bothered about Rugby and you can see why the papers etc run the stories about footballer and not rugby players.

Spot on there HB.

Is not that it's brushed under the carpet but if you asked the average person in the street who Steven Gerrard is and the vast majority will know even if they don't follow football.

Ask the same person who Lesley Vanikolo is and you'll get a blank stare back unless they follow rugby.

It's therefore a no brainer that stories involving footballers particularly Premiership players make the headlines whilst similar stories involving rugby players is often stuck on page 11.

Not good for english football to see a big name like him in the news for this, our players need to learn how to behave in the streets.

Not sure it's as easy as that - big name players are big targets for all the idiots in the world. They can't always walk away from situations, or should they never leave home?

Dirk, they get paid thousands of pounds a week, it's all THEIR FAULT!

Sorry, I realise that's too well-written to be a proper parody, but I couldn't bring myself to abuse a harmless apostrophe.
