England captains - best & worst

by soggy biscuit » 05 Feb 2010 16:16

Just caught someone on R5 suggesting that John Terry has been one of the worst England captains ever. I guess after the Euro 2008 qualifying where England won just over half their games and finished level on points with the team in 4th he may have a point

so, your best and worst?

What's the criteria?

Rio Ferdinand worst England captain without a doubt. Shouldn`t be in the team, let alone as captain. Steven Gerrard should have been given the job ahead of John Terry in the first place.

The worst was Terry Butcher - too limited a player, a cretin, and not even from England.

The best was Bogota Bobby Moore. One of the best players in the world in his position, respected in equal measure by team-mates and opponents, and successful.

Who can tell? Because there wasn't 24 hour press intusion and millions available from tabloids for people to grass their "friends" up in the old days, we have no idea of the private lives of past captains, and that's what Terry is being judged on.

Some stats in the Times today show that England and Chelsea have both been worse off with Terry in the side for the last two years.
