Blatter's taken his loopy juice again!

Sepp Blatter, the president of Fifa, football’s governing body, may be considering scrapping the offside rule, as hockey did more than a decade ago.

The Swiss held talks with a leading hockey official in Zurich a fortnight ago, with a view to determining what football might do about a rule that splits opinion and could do so again at the World Cup finals in South Africa this summer.

“He asked me a lot of questions about it and how successful it was, although he never offered an opinion, so it was difficult to judge what football might do,” said Leandro Negre, president of the International Hockey Federation. “But he did seem very interested in how we had implemented it.”

The offside rule in hockey was amended in 1987 to apply only to the final 25 yards and was temporarily abolished in 1996 before being done away with altogether two years later.

The result has been that the game has become more exciting and attractive to spectators, with play flowing more freely, fewer whistles and more space created in midfield.

Fifa amended the offside rule in 2003, but referees and their assistants might welcome a rule change that could rid football of many of its debatable decisions.

Barry Davies, the veteran BBC commentator for both sports, has some reservations about football following hockey’s lead. “I would love to see it given a trial in the lower leagues,” he said. “It would probably take a long time for players to adjust.

“It’s also very demanding physically, but I was amazed at how quickly hockey adapted and there’s no doubt the game is better for it. If football adopts anything from hockey, it should be the green warning card where a player is temporarily suspended for two minutes.”

Leave offside as it is, human error will never go away regardless of what they do. Suspending a player for two minutes is a waste of time as well!

Latest bright idea from Sepp

by Barry the bird boggler » 03 Mar 2010 08:28

FIFA are considering scrapping the offside rule, according to a report in The Times.

The newspaper reports that FIFA president Sepp Blatter has discussed what would be the most radical rule change in the sport for decades.

Blatter has apparently spoken to the president of the International Hockey Federation, Leandro Nagre, about how hockey abolished the rule in the 1990s.

"He asked me a lot of questions about it and how successful it was, although he never offered an opinion, so it was difficult to judge what football might do," said Negre.

"But he did seem very interested in how we had implemented it."

The offside rule in hockey was abolished in 1998 after a trial period two years earlier, a move which has been credited with making the game more free-flowing and exciting as a spectacle.

He got it wrong, the green card doesn't get you suspended from the game for 2 minutes, it's actually the equivalent of football's yellow card. The yellow card in hockey actually gets you suspended from the game and I think it's more like 5 minutes, rather than 2 minutes.

Should this get the go ahead, can I suggest the best tactic for this would be to surround the keeper for a direct free kick so they can't see or move to save the shot.

Sepp Blatter a good decade behind me on this one. I've been advocating the aboltion of offsides for at least ten years, obviously I didn't get the idea from hockey though, that shit would be ghey

Isn't the taking ideas from hockey just part of the making it ok to be a ghey in football campaign?

Abolish all rules. The only objective being to get the ball in the net by any means possible. Nation v Nation etc

Next he will extend the pitch so players can go behind the goal and allow fighting.

As Blatter clearly wants football to be "entertaining" - at all costs - may I suggest that he has missed a trick here?

Rather than some minor tinkering of the rules, such as abolishing offside, he should really think out of the box and do things that would encourage more viewers on the telly, and far more corporate sponsorship in the grounds, thus using up the seats vacated by old fuddy duddy so called fans.....

....I suggest the following.

Goals 30 feet wide and 15 feet high, with goalkeepers not allowed to be higher than 5' 6" tall, and the keepers kit must be a clown outfit - the more outrageous, the better.

Each team of 9 players must include at least 2 female models, kitted out in lingerie in the teams colours.

The games should last no more than an hour, with 4 sections (called quarters) with breaks between the segments of 10 minutes for advertising exclusively of sponsor products.

Whenever the ball goes out of play, a 30 second mini ad break is allowed for the sponsors product.

Whenever a goal is scored, teams of buff dancers dressed in not a lot, come on to the pitch (renamed "court") to gyrate about to the latest pop song from the hit parade played at a minimum of 120 decibels.

If at the end of the game the scores are "tied", then there will be overtime of 5 minutes (with a 5 minute ad break before and after) at the end of which, the team with the most points, sorry, goals, will be declared the winner. In the evnt that the overtime score is still tied, a phone vote will be taken of all the viewers of the game to decide which keepers clown outfit is the most outrageous, and the winner will be declared by Cheryl Cole, sorry, Twaddle (or whatever her poxy name is!).

i commend this proposal to the house.

Stolen! I think that was word-for-word the proposal that the USA FA put before FIFA after their bid to host the World Cup was successful.

How boring will is be without the offside rule? Teams will pick it up and hoof it straight to opposing 18 yard area without actually trying to play it and work it forward.

TBH I would have thought that Blatter, of all people, would have realised that copying a sport like Hockey, that destroyed its credentials as a spectator sport with the simple introduction of the double-gusset, was A Bad Idea.
