World cup memories

by floyd__streete » 29 Apr 2010 13:55

1990 was the first world cup I followed and follow it I did, religiously. The England team now is probably more gifted than the 1990 side, but what heroes; Shilton, Butcher, Lineker, Gazza. I don't have the same sense of attachment to the pampered pouting prats of 2010, but then I am not 10 years old any more. 1990 started with a bump when Cameroon beat Argies in a game which included the worst foul since Harald Schumacher. Recall also some absolute pearlers in that world cup, Thomas Skuhravy's name sticks in the mind, as does Baggio. Then of course Plat''s volley vs Belgique. All this played out in front of me searching for in-game stats through The Orbis World Cup Collection in the days before 'the red button' 8) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ORBIS-WORLD-CUP-I ... 1001r26560

First WC for me properly was 1982, I remember the 1978 theme tune but that's it...
1982.
Keegan's heavy perm missing that goal, Kuwati walking off the pitch during the match, Battiston decked by Toni Schumacher, Narey's goal, Robson's header assisted by an ex-RFC manager throw in, Italy drawing everything then Rossi scoring all the time, NI beating Spain, then becoming mortal afterwards.

There were a fair few classics in that tournament.

Italy 3 Bra 2, West Germany just about squeaking though against France etc.

Went to the 1990 World Cup.
Managed to go to the Belgium and West Germany match, can't remember much apart from the lager, northerners, campsite outside Turin, trains, Adamski's Killer, and some football & meeting a RFC fan after the Belgium match.

I can also remember us thinking that England did us proud that tournament and although we rode our luck at times, we could have won it that year.

Oh well...

Didn't see any trouble...pillspillspillspills...

The Banks save from Pele.

Carlos Alberto's goal in the final

Italy 4 West Germany 3 in the semis (the Germans had a player called Schnelliger)

Peter Bonetti

First world cup I can properly remember was '02

When Ronaldiniho scored that free kick, and all the non footballing lads and girls at school, cheering that England had been knocked out, literally could have killed them!

Earliest memory is watching Brazil v Zaire in 1974, one of the best memories is 1978 watching Peru put 4 past Scotland  watching them fail to beat the mighty Iran   and finally just miss out after beating Holland

1990 is still the best England memory

Worst memory is that thug Schumacher not being red carded for his attempted decapition of Battiston in 1982

Funnily enough the world cups since 1990 have all been rather dull and mostly un-inspiring, presumably a side effect of the money driven win at all costs nature of the game these days.

My worst memory, of course, is Diego Maradona and his blatant handball.

Best memory is England getting to the semis in 1990.

The first I remember is '94, listening to the final on the radio because I wasn't allowed to stay and my parents weren't watching it.

98 for me.

I can remember watching one England game at school, cant remember which one though. Also watching the second round game against the Argies on my own in my parents room.

Bergkamps goal in the quarter final was immense. 8)

'86 is the first World Cup I have memories of. Group of sleep, Wilkins getting sent off, Lineker's bandage and his 6 goals, knowing that the world was an unfair place, but...

Completing the panini album 8)

'86 for me too. Fair fcuks to the Mexicans, their World Cups sound like no other. That hum is just incredible ...

Completed (my one and only) Panini album too. A mate is doing the SA'10 version. Went in the newsagent and bought the whole box of stickers from the counter. Schoolboy fantasy 8)

86 is the first I remember. Time difference made it difficult to watch games though.

1990 was immense, though England played badly for the most part. Dire performances against Ireland, Belgium, Egypt and Cameroon. Needed two Lineker penalties to scrap past the latter. Anyway, defining moment - Platt in the 120th minute:

98, was able to watch the game vs Tunisia at school as I won a quiz on the England team 8)

The confusion around Ronaldo's fitness, rumours of him fitting, Bergkamp's goal vs Argentina, Owen's goal, Batistuta's nod when Beckham got sent off, Anderton scoring vs Colombia, France shining in the final....great tournament

Just about remember the scandal surrounding Bobby Moore prior to the 1970 World Cup when he was arrested on suspicion of theft. I was six and still have the pictures of the players from each squad which I collected that year.
I don't remember the games though.
So Germany 74 are my first memories. I preferred 1978 to be fair partly because me and my mates were supporting Peru and Iran against Scotland(As someone with Welsh blood I still bear the scars of Joe Jordan's handball against us in the WCQ in 77 which cost us dear).
Argentina 78 was a great tournament and fair play to Scotland for their win over the Dutch...not that it did them much good.

02' was the first I can remember, Was in primary school and our headmaster let us watch matches in the assembly hall. First actual memory was Ronaldinho's free kick that looped over Seaman. Rivaldo's fall like he'd been shot when the ball was kicked at him in the corner and Ronaldo being immense were other memories!
