Luque's sights on PSV move
ALBERT Luque has told Newcastle United he wants to move to PSV Eindhoven and end his Premiership nightmare.
The Magpies are hoping to agree a permanent deal with prospective employers at some stage this month but have been unable to find a club willing to buy out his contract.
PSV have emerged as the leading candidates for Luque's signature but they are not in a position to match his wages.

what a shame.

Oh and by the way.. some quick googling said that before they made the €30M profit, they had racked up about a €30M deficit the years before that. Sounds like someone had to cut the cloth

In 2007/8 PSV had a turnover of €138m, and made a pre-tax profit of €30m.

In 2006/7 PSV had a turnover of €110m, and made a pre-tax profit of €6m.

In 2005/6 PSV had a turnover of €74m, and made a pre-tax profit of €4m.

Before that they had made significant losses but on the face of it the figures above suggest that PSV are on a successful path to financial recovery - whether that will now translate into paying wages that would better Reading's just yet, I wouldn't know for certain as that's up to their board, but one would think that ever increasing turnover and retention of profits in the last 3 years, plus virtual assurance of European football next season, will give them a better than even chance of beating our (likely) Championship level wages.

Well most sane people would think that anyway.

No idea on any others, but the first transfer fee I found for them when I did a quick google was for around £3.5m for Stefan Nijland in 2008.

Does that help you?

Even if they don't tend to pay big fee's, it still doesn't mean they don't pay decent wages or aren't a decent option for a promising youngster currently playing in the Championship.

Ideal So nobody can tell me what the biggest transfer fee they have paid the last three years is?
Is it even £1M?
Or is it in fact zero? I struggle to find that they have paid for a single player the last three years.

To be fair, nothing on Soccerbase indicated that they'd outlayed any money for a few years.

It looks like they do the majority of their transfer activity through frees etc, but Soccerbase just looks lazy with their transfers or that PSV just don't release the fee's they pay.

Isaksson for example, there was a fee involved but not one that the press or Soccerbase got hold of, although Sky did at one point try to suggest it would be c. £2m.

Ideal Well even if they did manage to stump up £2M for a player, it still doesn't exactly put them in the same league as Real Madrid and Manchester United.
FFS, even RFC have paid more than that for a player.
I simply don't think these guys would possibly ever a) afford to match our asking price and b) afford to pay wages that would draw him away from England.
That some of you think that is cause for ridicule is entirely up to you, I may just have a totally different view of Dutch football, but I rate that as a backyard two-horse league much in the same way I view the Norwegian league.

Realisticly we should be asking for at least £5M. Could they afford that? I doubt it.

Ok I can see your argument, PSV--well the Dutch league in general--arent the biggest spenders in the world. I can even try to bring myself to agree that their wages are close to ours. However IF they did come in for Gylfi and IF Reading accpeted, what they do have is European football. Forget that they push to win their league on a regular basis (at least to my understanding), but the prospect of playing in Europe and having the ability to show yourself off against teams in Spain, Italy, England, etc is something that Reading does not offer. It would be a potentially smart transition move.

That being said, its not something thats likely to happen. He'll probably go to a mid/low level prem club which IMO is the worst thing he could do because whatever the team wont give him the best chance to shine. That is of course if he leaves...

That's a very convoluted way to say that you accept you were wrong.

Even a quick glance at Wiki shows that PSV have spent serious money in the past. They spent over 11m Euro's on Kezman, 8m+ of Hesselink and 6m+ for van Nistleroy. Ok they're all a few years back now, and times have changed, but they have a history we can't compete with.

I've looked a bit closer and found they also reportedly paid £3.5m for Orlando Engelaar (who Shalke wanted to keep) and £1.7m for Stanislav Manolev (who was linked with Aston Villa at the same time), both this season. Players want to play at the highest level.

I don't know how their wages compare, but I definately think playing for a club like PSV would appeal to any young player not at a top club. You only have to look at the list of players they've sold over the last ten years to see they're a good stepping stone to the riches on offer at the elite clubs.

I think Rother has provided you with a pretty well constructed case to suggest irrespective of transfer fees paid out that PSV would 1) Be an attractive option for Siggy and 2) Would offer him a more attractive financial package available at Reading FC.

I think Ideal should be a football agent.

He'd get his clients to all the big clubs and stear them clear of the minnows like PSV.

I would not like The Sig to leave but I am enough of a realist to know that if a club offering European competition every season came calling it would be difficult for him to turn the offer down. And judging by the majority of comments about PSV, it would appear that they are operating within their means. But keeping feet firmly on the ground, this is his first season at this level. He is an unknown quantity. Next season we will see how good he really is. Anyone heard of second season syndrome?

I will make a prediction here and now.

If The Sig has a successful season with us in 2010/11 and we do not get promotion, he will leave for a bigger and better club.

For anyone to suggest that if we recieved an offer from a club of PSV's pedigree that was acceptable to us, the player involved would hold a press conference and state that though flattered by their interest, he was going to stay at Reading, is totally, utterly and completely deluded!!

Difficult choice I admit; Ajax or Scunthorpe. Toughie.

They are 3rd in the Eredivision, 5 points ahead of the team in 4th, so European football is a probability for them next season.

So next season could be Bayern Munich or Burton Albion. Another toughie.

Doesn't stop us from asking for a high transfer fee though.

Sheff wednesday lol

Newcastle won't be here next season also, but again thats besides the point.

Scott Brown turned down a move to premiership reading as he wanted to wait for a bigger club like celtic, put into perspective the dutch league is better than the SPL, you haven't got an argument Ideal.

Ideal You clearly rate both the Scottish and Dutch leagues.
I don't rate either.
I think there is more of a sporting challenge playing for Wycombe than there is playing for Celtic.
I'd rather watch 22 baboons fight eachother for a banana than watch a single minute of scottish "football".. it's simply not football.

Similarly I am not impressed with what goes on in Dutch football.
Erik Nevland was a 20-goal a season striker for Groningen. I'm sure Ola Toivonen is a good player on his day, but can he really even tie SHunt's shoelaces?
Probably hard for you to comprehend, but I really don't expect you to have considered these things.

Its not as if the dutch league have produced any of the dutch national team players that are currently ranked higher than England is it

You can real off any random you want, the fact remains the likes of Sniejder, Van der vaart, van der sar, robben, hunterlaar, kuyt, etc all played there and started there and Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV are all massive clubs who produce big names round Europe.

Its not as if Celtic have beaten man utd in europe in recent years or Rangers have got to a UEFA cup final is it. Once again, completely ignoring common sense for your own agenda.

Gylfi would move to PSV in a heartbeat, you need to get over yourself.

but they werent big names, or that brilliant when they played in dutch football were they. they became great after they left.

gylfis planned career path will be to stay in england, where the money, best league, most exciting football is. play one or two more seasons for reading, then get a move to a top half premiere league side.

They all made their names in Dutch football before moving onto bigger and better things though.

I agree that Sigurdsson would probably prefer to stay in England with his next move, but to say he wouldn't be interested in playing for a club like PSV with all that they can offer is just daft.

Playing for PSV would be a better move than going to a mid table Premiership side like Wigan or Fulham because he'd get to prove himself in Europe whilst also playing in a more technical league where his weaknesses might not get exposed.

Lets just hope we get another full season out of him first though!
