He'll stay in England, whether or not that is with us next season is debatable. We have to face facts, we're now a selling club and will probably offload at least one major asset a season. In the long run you just feel Siggy should stick with us for one or two more seasons before sealing the right move, however footballers are impatient and want to play in the Premiership ASAP.

I reckon one of Newcastle or West Brom will pick him up for £2m, but he definately won't move to another championship side. It's down to McDermott to persuade him that we can seriously push for promotion next year.

Have the club offered him a extended deal yet (like Church) ?

Ideal You clearly rate both the Scottish and Dutch leagues.
I don't rate either.
I think there is more of a sporting challenge playing for Wycombe than there is playing for Celtic.
I'd rather watch 22 baboons fight eachother for a banana than watch a single minute of scottish "football".. it's simply not football.
Similarly I am not impressed with what goes on in Dutch football.
Erik Nevland was a 20-goal a season striker for Groningen. I'm sure Ola Toivonen is a good player on his day, but can he really even tie SHunt's shoelaces?
Probably hard for you to comprehend, but I really don't expect you to have considered these things.

Have you actually ever watched Dutch football ...ever????? The reality is, if you can comprehend, PSV are not cash strapped but their main source of income is generated by the owning company (Phillips). It's fairly clear Phillips have pulled the reigns in a bit over the past three years but shirt sales are fairly vibrant in the south of the Netherlands, they average 33,500 per home game and it would cost you €25 to get in If they were interested and the price Reading was asking was reasonable (given the fact that he is a relatively young and relatively untested) I'm sure they could match his salary expectations. Could PSV compete with top English clubs in terms of transfer fees and salaries........no. Could they compete with Reading......yes and some.

I'd dare say, that a number of clubs will continue to monitor his progress but I would expect him still to be a Reading player next season. If he continues to impress and Reading fail to win promotion then 2011 / 2012 could well be a different story.

Where he actual ends up....who knows but don't under estimate the lure of CL football even if it's mixed with backyard, second rate hoofball. It's also about visibility and stepping stones.....a two / three year stint at PSV with time on the pitch may lead to a more lucrative contract with one of the European giants as opposed to warming a top flight English bench.

The only thing I'm a little concerned about is how this story hit the Icelandic press....as far as I'm aware, scouts don't wear colours and don't speak to the press.......agent talk maybe? or just another quite week in Iceland?

Scouts will quite often wear club coats or something that migth mark them out.

Clubs usually (from my knowledge at least) ask each other for comp tickets for games they attend and the press will know some of the other scouts and they'll all talk about who's there etc etc.

As you say though, just as likely to be his agent just getting his name about, or the paper just filling a column inch or two.

What a shambles this thread is! It is pretty much by the by as to whether PSV can afford higher wages or not. I am certain Gylfi is not so stupid as to base any decision about his future purely on that. Don't forget he is young, has been brought up through our academy system, is bound to have some (though naturally not unlimited) loyalty to us. Also the Premiership has far higher status in this country, and no doubt Iceland too, so it is not unreasonable to suspect his ambitions might well lie in that direction. Don't forget it is not beyond the realms of possibility that we could be aspiring to Premiership football in a season or two, so he needn't feel stunted or frustrated while playing for us. I have no doubt that he will attract a lot of interest this summer, and we may not be able to keep him for more than a year or two, if he keeps up his current form. But am I sweating over PSV right now? oxf*rd no

Bob, I don't think anyone suggested he'd make his next move purely on the money, but it's a significant factor if a club wants him and CAN offer him better wages as well as step up another level, ie Champions League football.

If PSV came knocking he'd have to seriously consider it because it could be a very good move for him. If a Premiership club came in for him as well I'd imagine he'd look at that more favourably, but that wasn't quite the point being discussed.

The way things are going we're going to struggle to keep hold of him this summer. Personally I think he'd be better served by staying in the Championship for another season as he still has a lot to learn. The problem we face is that the money on offer in the Premiership is far greater than what we can realistically offer him. In a profession where your reputation can move up and down so quickly, I can understand why players grab the first opportunity to move up the ladder when it comes.

The lower leagues are full of players who've almost made it, and been linked to big moves but then it's never happened.

You'd hope it would go through their minds wouldn't you, but in reality your probably asking them to turn down a pay rise of at least £5k a week and the possibilty that they might break into the team.

I think I said it earlier in the thread, the ideal situation (or best we can hope for if an offer comes in) might be we sell him for loads, he gets his pay rise but we then loan him back for a season.

As I've said elsewhere, I think he'll stay.

BUT

Should clubs come knocking they'll have to pay a hefty price and £3-4 million+ in our coffers would enable Brian to go and sign the likes of Griff, Kizi, Bertrand and others etc.

Obviously that's the prefered scenario but IF Gylfi wants to leave the money would be useful.

We might £2m for selling Marek, Cisse, Henry, Mooney & Davies. Assuming we can find people to take them. I'm pretty sure Sig won't go for under £2m.

Isn't Marek a free transfer this summer? Cisse too? Mooney too? <-- (guess)
