Ian Royal Something he's guilty of at throw ins too. Opposition defences and midfields must love him... oooh, Gunter's on the ball or taking the throw in, plenty of time to find our shape and set ourselves.

He's not on his own there tbf Ian.

Never a truer word spoken, and the issue at throw ins is often also the lack of any movement from the player's on the pitch. But there were a number of occasions he had easy quick options he didn't take. I wonder if it's a perpetuating cycle... no one moves early because they know the full back will have to take it and won't be looking to release quick ball, then once the full back's decided he's ready, everyone's tightly marked and there's still little movement so it still doesn't come in. The full back never looks to release quick ball, because he knows no bugger is going to be looking for it.

The nearest player's should be looking for an instant opportunity, if there isn't one wait 'til everyone's set. Then at least two players have to move at once to receive, not one at a time. Make the oppo wonder where it's going to go and how soon, they'll make mistakes and leave space.

Spot on.

Have to say I largely agree with Ian Royal about Gunter today. He was dire for the first hour. He and Williams were virtually holding hands at times. As soon as Evans went off and Williams went central he was like a totally different player and probably had the best 30 mins of the season for him. And it was because he was being positive rather than his usual meek and timid.

On the other hand I thought their right back was very good until Ola John made him look stupid on a few occasions.

KC Royal The problem with Gunter isn't that I think he's shit, he rarely has a bad game for me when I see him, it's that I expect more for someone of his experience. Over the last couple of years I've generally been more impressed with his Wales performances, and he's played centre-back at times in those games.

I think we'd miss him if he left though unless we signed a replacement.

In my view the problem with Gunter is that when he's bad he is so shit its unbelievable. He has some really good games, but he just seems really random. Lets not forget Brian signed Kelly while was there (here).

I think the club should sign him up again - whats the alternative? Get £500k but have to spend £1m on a new player? That equates to £10k/week over a year. Maybe just stump up the wages and get him signed up?!?!?!

Thought he was bang average yesterday. What struck me is that the tempo of his play, passing/throw-ins, picked up once we scored.
So is he a confidence player that plays better in a better team?
I'm not so sure now he would be that hard to replace.

Sun says this morning we're after Norwich right back Steven Whittaker.

Oh dear no thanks.

There's a reason he's currently third in the pecking order at Norwich for that position, behind Andre Wisdom and Ivan Pinto.

It's because he's low table championship standard, became boo boy for Norwich fans.

Plus he's 31, it's hardly the future is it?

Shouldn't Keown and/or Long be challenging for the position instead....

AthleticoSpizz Really Ian??

Seriously, were you actually there today?

Can't remember the block but think Ian's generally spot on tbf. Honestly shocked at all the praise he's getting, and i'm certainly not anti-Gunter!

2nd half I remember think before we scored he gave the ball away carelessly which led to a Sheffield Weds break with him out of position. I'll admit he played fairly well in the latter part of the game, but I actually thought he was pretty poor up until then.

If you seriously can't remember the block then I think that puts all other comment from you in the 'ignore' box. It was such a significant moment in the game that anyone who missed it clearly wasn't concentrating.

Let's be clear, attacker has open goal to shoot at. No chance he will miss. Goalkeeper is wrong footed. Gunter throws himself at the ball and deflects said shot over the bar. It was a match saver. Yet you can't remember it?

Gunter was clear contender for MoM. Anyone who can't see that is simply prejudiced against him.

Agreed with that WSM. The block was exceptional and I thought his crossing was much improved yesterday, put some exceptional low, first time crosses in which caused their defence issues.

Pretty much sums up Gunters style of play
1: Receive ball
2: Run to the half way line
3: Stop and play the ball sidways/backwards
4: Repeat

I certainly have no prejudice against him and thought he had a decent game yesterday. However, the "attacker had an open goal to shoot at" because his marker went to sleep as the cross came in. His marker was Gunter.
If you have FL recorded just freeze frame as the cross comes in and you'll see that he completely loses Forestieri. This is why people have concerns about his defensive abilities.
Good recovery to block though so credit to him for that.

So he runs to the halfway line and then keeps possession by passing to a team mate? Fine.

Cooper ran into space yesterday, passed it forward and they scored.

Nothing wrong with keeping possession but this is his default option too much of the time. Given his pace wouldn't you just like to see him take the opposite full back on now and again just as Obita does down the other flank ?

Not if it means he is going to loose possession I wouldn't. Obita is more comfortable taking his man on because he started out as a winger.
