An insurance related question.

I was thinking about another way of reducing the car insurance for my son might be to get a moped/motorbike for a year, even if he didn't use it much, so that he'd have a years no claims for a car insurance. Does anyone know whether this might be worth it, i.e would the no claims transfer from a bike to a car. Or alternatively is there a site where you can get quotes from without specifying exact details of what you want to insure? Most sites seem to think you already own the car/bike and you need to enter in registration details to get a quote.

You can put in the type of moped or whatever that you're looking at - you can click a box that says "not bought yet" - when we did the quote for my son for a car, we found one on auto trader that he'd be interested in and put that reg in - but it's just as easy to put a make/model in and get a good idea.

Seriously, I'd look at Admiral. Ozy recommended that as he'd done it with his daughter - and it knocks a load off the total price - we've put all 3 cars into it and it comes out a £2200 in total - with mine and Schards' cars being about £400 each, even though I'm paying £600 for mine at the moment - but still means son is paying less than half than it would cost if he insured his separately.

Thanks RL, just had a look at Admiral. It's pretty vague on what happens with the no claims bonus. As it's one policy if one of you has an accident everyone is affected, so what happens when you change to another policy? e.g we both have full no claims, son has a accident; does that mean we all lose our no claims, so if we go elsewhere next year when the premium sky rockets do all 3 of us have to take the no claims reduction? They also potentially hit your no claims even if it's not your fault, it looks like it would certainly be worth getting the protected no claims.

I hadn't looked that closely - but Schards and I have always had protected no claims. I thought Schards no claims went on his policy and mine went on my policy. I'll get Schards to double check it before we go ahead with it though!

Admiral deal with multi-car policies on a named driver basis and each driver has an individual NCB. There are mixed reviews but then that's probably true of most insurers.

This makes interesting reading:

This is why I borrowed my mum's car for so long!

I then bought a car and "fronted" - although i wasn't actually fronting as I then left the car at home and my dad sold his car and used it while I was at uni. Then by the time I got to my third year of uni and took the car up I put it in my name and the insurance really wasn't too bad by that stage due to age etc.

Worked out pretty well overall.

RL, my car looks like a piece of arsecrap, but it drives well, I will be getting a car from work early next year.
Talk to me.

Doesn't your little brother want it?

Admiral still looking cheaper but I'll have to transfer my no claims to son's car (but have car in my name with him as main driver) and have no no claims on my car - but we're going to get rid of either that or Schards' car next year anyway - as we don't need so many cars between us now. It's a real minefield and we can't find many cars around at the moment anyway.

He hasn't actually flunked his exams yet - he's doing a couple of retakes after Xmas that could see him getting 3 C's in the Summer -I'd be more than happy with that tbh. And the money he is using to get a car/pay the insurance didn't come from us!

LOLz

He got a yellow punto - nice little car. As to insurance, currently in midst of complaint re misleading selling/advertising. Need to keep it under my hat at the moment - but should I triumph or not, I'll be letting you all know.
