Speedway parking to end?

by riverroyal » 24 Apr 2007 12:06

On the radio today it says a new casino is going to be built as part of the redevelopment of the speedway track.

Does this mean the parking there will be lost? :x

The new stadium and casino are being built on a new site by the side of Island Road (opposite the new water treatment site).

I have no idea what will happen to current speedway site.

From the EP:

[quote]Reading will get a new ‘racino’ by 2008, planning bosses have agreed.
At a meeting of Reading Borough Council’s planning committee last night proposals for a racino – an American term for a casino and racing track – were approved subject to legal agreement.
The development in South Reading will be the first of its kind in the UK and will include a brand new greyhound and speedway stadium on land alongside Island Road,
formerly a trail bike park.
There will also be free car parking and kennels.
Speaking exclusively to the Evening Post, chief executive of Gaming International Clarke Osborne said last night: “We are delighted with the outcome.
“We want to get on and give Reading its racino.â€

it is to be redeveloped as part of the new gateway to Reading, bridge over linking it to the other side.

IIRC there was a plan to develop a hotel there....

I would think that they would want to carry on with football parking though, why have a large tarmac area designed to hold lots of sports fans cars and not earn the money on offer ?

My guess is that parking will still be in operation at the new site - just be a bit further to walk(ies).

Turning the old site into a simple car park for overflow to both venues would be far too sensible I fear.

...and not very lucrative, especially when they could sell it off to a property developer to build another office block that will lie empty for years.

Regardless of whether their is car parking there I think the club need to pull their finger out for next season and agree a deal with Green Park for their car park. We used it once this season (a friend of a friend who works there gave us a lift) and it must hold about 200 cars and was completely empty. With the stadium expansion this has to be a must!

Although the reasons that we can;t park there have been discussed many times before and the club can no more pull their finger out and sort that than they can sort the weather....

No a must is finding alternative and efficient ways of getting more people to the ground without using their cars.

Green Park do not have to let fans use their cark parks for games and if they don't want to then it's a no go. The club could through money at it but that would then be recouped from the fans and probably further price increases for those car parks.

They should be encouraging people to not bother taking their cars, which is what they are doing. There are plenty of ways of getting to the stadium without driving, especially if you do not have to worry about small children.

I'm convinced I heard something on 107fm yeserday about green Park adding a large residential development and sorting the station out, which presumably will mean a definite no to parking there but will also add another means of public transport to games, both good moves IMO

Just a side:

I hear other premiership clubs get free shuttles from town to their grounds, is this correct? If so, why doesn't Reading do this (Instead charge £3 per person)?

Wait a minute... more money :o

Don't the club already subsidise the bus service? Any charge is made by Reading Buses not RFC.
