Is Madejski Stadium in danger of collapsing?

by Rawlie19 » 22 Sep 2007 18:49

[whinge]Today in North Stand B16 we had new stewards everywhere, and they were completely clueless as to how to steward an event at all. I was leaning against my seat (not sat in it but standing up with my bum leaning against the back) and a jobsworth came up and told me to sit down. To which I said 'No'.

Then there was activity right by the vomitry where 4 jobsworths (FOUR!!) were all looking anxious and pointing up towards the back of B16. Oh my goodness I thought, there must be a hostage situation up there or something... No... there was a 7 or 8 year old boy standing on a chair. "He can't do that, he'll break the chair!" they were saying. Now if a 7 year old standing on a chair is going to break it then how will they stand the weight of most of the fatboys that come to the games? So one of the jobsworths went all the way up and had a go at the boy, and then went on to have a go at the boys father who just looked bemused as to what the emergency was.

Next there was a very young boy laying over 3 seats near the front of the stadium. This was a good 45 minutes before kick-off and there were no people complaining about the lad being in there seat, but still, jobsworth at the front felt the need to go and have a go at the lad.

Then (and this is all still before the game is anywhere near starting by the way) one of my friends was standing in the row in front of mine chatting when the owners of the seats she was standing by turned up, so she moved out of their way and into the aisle next to me and just started to say "I'll go down to my seat now" when fat jobsworth came over and said "look love you really can't stand there, you're blocking the whole aisle" (no, YOU'RE blocking the whole aisle telling us that because you're obese, but potato potato), and that was the last straw, and I turned to her and said
Rawlie19 Oh calm down love, is it your first day or something?"
to which she widened her eyes and wobbled her many chins and said
Fat Jobsworth You can't talk to me like that, I'm going to get my supervisor"
Good, I said. when her supervisor came she said she'd had a complaint that I'd sworn at a jobsworth and that that was unexeptable behaviour. Everyone around me were amazed and told her exactly what had been said. We then went on to have a conversation about jobsworth doing there job to 110% capacity, and when I explained that 110% was physically impossible for them to do and that all I wanted was 100%, nothing more nothing less, she didn't get it. "Surely you'd rather they did their job to 110% than 50% wouldn't you?" ... er, no, I'd rather they just did their job, and not more than their job. If we had a referee doing his job 110% would you say as he was doing MORE than he was supposed to that he had had a good game? No, you'd say that he'd ruined the game without letting it flow and was a twat (stand up Mr Keith Stroud).

Anyway, she let me off with a warning  thanks for that![/whinge]

Stewards 1, Rawlie 0

But more worryingly, atmosphere 0 as well. How can they ask fans to get behind the team then on the other hand impose such atmosphere destroying stewarding?

Yet the jobsworths let one bloke stand in the stairs down from Y21 for @ 5 minutes leading up to half-time!

As for the early leavers - well that's fine, linger on the stairs and in the exits as long as you like!

Stewards' jobs could be made easy if fans did not deliberately antagonise them.

Yeah, I deliberately antagonised them

Oh yeah, 10 minutes from the end people started to build up in the exits standing and watching the game, and then after we scored the 2nd they were standing down the stairs. Jobsworths were just sitting there doing nothing. They went from 110% BEFORE the game to 50% DURING the game.

They are TWATS, fact.

Perhaps they're twats because they're the only people prepared to do the job in the face of the hassle and antagonism they receive every match.

All the decent stewards realise that they once they're trained they can go elsewhere for more money, so the ones that are left are those who've not been driven elsewhere.

Rawlie19 Yeah, I deliberately antagonised them

Well, you did. You were asked to sit down and replied 'no'. Then one asked your friend to move, and you said 'is it your first day love?'

I don't like the stewarding any more than you do, but they are only doing the job they are paid to do. They either do their job or get fired, so why should they let you break the rules?

At half time, I was talking to the steward manning the door by Gate 8, and he was telling me how he thought the rules were stupid.

Fair enough, but he's still got to enforce them.

I've sat in the seat I'm in now for 4+ years now, been a season ticket holder for 6+, been going to Reading games for 15+, and NEVER had a problem with stewards before. These were ALL new stewards in this section.

What difference does any of that make?

In fact, if you have never had problems with stewards before, why pick on them now?

But were the rules being broken? A couple of seasons ago my kids and their friends were told off for standing in front of their seats before kickoff! The jobsworth pointed out the CCTV cameras and told them that they were being recorded and would be ejected! It was only when I insisted that a supervisor was called over to discuss the alleged breach of stadium rules that common sense prevailed and a semi apology was offered!

Sit down and watch the game............jump up when we score.......sit down for the other 89 minutes.....its easy, nothing too brain taxing

Personally, I'm more f3ucked off with missing a lot the first ten minutes of the second half each game.........with folk returning to their seats....obstructing my view, carrying their rollovers and powerades...... totally oblivious to the pitchside action  .

probably the same folk that complain about the ticket prices, then happily miss half of the game lining up to pay well over the odds for some congealed fat and some coloured liquid sugar....can you not sit still for two bloody hours once a fortnight?

It's a sign of the times I'm afraid. Nobody is allowed to apply common sense anymore. Traffic wardens, stewards, police officers, teachers, social workers, florists, bouncers, it makes no difference. They're all expected to play it by the book.

Something is amiss...

Common Sense, but the younger ones on here will be devoid of it (coz their teachers allowed them to call them by their first names).

And "punishment" is an ASBO medal

Stewards don't give a toss about OUR atmosphere, they are certainly not Reading fans so why should they. They are told we are the scum of the earth and at any given opportunity they can issue threats and act like a Nazi regeime. The atmosphere we might try and create is seen as an act of defiance and blatently shows we have no regard for their authority.

This is only a matter of opinion, I have no evidence to back this up, and is unlikely to be an opinion the plastic fans share.

I find the best solution is simply not to go.

That helps the atmosphere how? Or are you one of those that boos the players? In which case staying away is helping the atmosphere.
