working class hero Although JM has said the cost of expansion is £1000 per seat - so almost 2 seasons worth of selling out the extension to break even.... So prices would still rise to make up for massive wages. Let's be fair JM [for all his spin] ain't no philanthropist.....

Daniella We hadn't peaked then had we? We have now and the only way is backwards.

That's your opinion and not a fact!

If we do receive some investment as is John Madejski's current plan, that would make us far more competitive and the target then would be european football.

Never say never!

Unless we start paying OTT wages we will not attract top players. If we do opt to break the wage structure then prices will have to rise - and there is no proof that investment will work [Leeds / Bradford / Barnsley etc]. If prices rise then more fans will be forced out. We are already pondering on giving up out STs next year - not because of relegation worries, more on cost grounds.
I suspect many others will also bite the bullet if prices rise.

And so we see the dilemma. Raise wages and prices and lose the fans who paid when in the wilderness - and there is no real rush for STs atm....
Do not invest and sink and lose the glory hunters.....

European football. You are having a

But with an expansion prices wouldn't have to rise because the extra capacity would allow the overall income to rise in fact, there's no way anyone could defend the club if prices did rise after such an expansion.

Yes, but now balance that total expenditure against two years' worth of Premier League TV revenue. It's not going on new players, and not very much of it is going on increased wages for players, so where is it actually going?

As it's clearly not being used to invest in the team I can only hope it's being used to invest in the stadium.
If it's not being held back to fund the stadium expansion

Katie Marsden This decision will define the club for the next 20 years.

If the club has any ambitions of becoming an established Premiership club it needs to go ahead with this. I see even Fulham are extending their ground to 30,000.

I think if we showed some more ambition in the transfer market we'd fill a 30,000 stadium more often than not. Who cares if tickets go on general sale, it matters not. All that matters is if the ground is 90% full on average for the whole season. Only very few clubs sell out every home game.

If the club don't go ahead with the extension it will send out a message that it has no ambition at all.

Totally agree!

Nail.
On.
Head.

Ditto.

I think the East Stand extension is a nailed on certainty, the other two stands may have to wait a bit longer.

Agreed. There's no need to expand to 38,000 just yet, even if we stay up IMO. Give that a few more years and see how we go with the 30,000.

I suspect that Mr M is about to show how to make substantial profits from football..... He bought the club so it is his right. What annoys me is that h still goes on TV and burbles about his £40 million outlay. A good estimate is that he is down about £7 million - not inconsequential but nowhere near the sum he claims.

I also 'hope' that cash will be invested for the club. But hope and belief are not the same.

Please show all working !!

I believe £40 million is seen as the cost of the new stadium development (and IIRC not all of that came from JM's pocket).
You then need to factor in 15 years of loss making, cost of expansions etc.

To be honest I have no idea what the balance sheet may look like, and I'm not sure JM has actually taken any money back out so any credit is only 'book value' of the assets.

It would be really interesting to see a properly worked equatin showing the position, but I'm not sure it can be done. I wouldn;t just flash guesses up though.

From what I know, the total cost of the MadStad £37M. The land itself cost just £1, but there was £6M for decontaminating the ground and £6M contribution towards the A33.

£3.25M was raised by the sale of Elm Park, and all except £10M came from the sale of the land for the business and retails parks (i.e. about £23.75M)

I have it that JM was down no more than £10M on the whole enterprise in the end - or £1M a year for "naming rights".

I can just see the board meeting now.

' Nigel, forget your detailed and carefully crafted and calculated business plan for this extension thingy, I want to know what the real commercial brains on HNA think'

or then again maybe not.

It really is time the club offered you a proper, permanent job as spokesman!

The please show all workings argument could equally be applied to the figures the club/chairman keep coming out with. If supporters keep being given the mushroom treatment, it's not surprising that they have to resort to speculation.

There are numerous instances where club claims/sums don't add up, not least the way that transfer fees appear to change from the time we buy a player to the time we sell him on (look at what has been said about the Halford fees and then read what the player himself says in 'Reading Between The Lines'). Likewise ticket office claims re ticket sales when pushing tickets and subsequent claims when attendances don't reach the levels forecast or when there are problems such as those experienced at the Liverpool game.

It would be a very interesting experience I suspect.

As ever you make points a very inappropriate moments.

How is pointing out that what is claimed as the input from the chairman may be quite different from reality in any way acting as 'club spokesman' ?

And why do you continue with the ridiculour assertion that the club 'gives us the mushroom treatment' ? You examples of this are frankly pathetic.

Another very good attendance today, although Derby were very disappointing with their away following. (Sky taken into account)

As said, if attendances carry on as they are, then the east stand extension will almost certainly go ahead next May.

All in all, the result today, the support and the news of possibly a strong investment in the team in January, it's been a very positive day for the Royals. Long may that continue.

 Wasn't there talk of high investment in the Summer? Depends what they mean by big investment I suppose. We'll need to spend big to attract anything like the standard of player we need. Look at Sheffield United's gates this season - notice anything? This could well be us next season. People pay to watch teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea - not Hull, Crystal Palace and the like.

Yes there was, and like you, I'll believe it when I see it, but it sounds a lot like Coppell has made it crystal clear we can not survive at this level much longer if we don't invest.

As he said, the more you pay, the less risk you take on a player. Although that isn't always the case of course.

But it does sound like he's made it clear we spend and try and take the club to the next level, or we go backwards, and the club are being seen to back him on this.

Although as things stand after nearly 25% of the season it could more likely be Derby, Bolton, Birmingham, Sunderland, Middlesboro, Fulham or Wigan !!!

Having looked at Sheff U attendances this season they have a higher average after 5 games than the season they went up with us.

I like the look of Charlton who increased from 19k to 26k average over an 8 year period in the Prem.

couple of useful pages for us saddos

Any bits of gossip from those in the know?

It's 6 months until work would apparently begin so we should be hearing some confirmation of any work being done soon.

I heard the east stand capacity will go ahead no matter if we go down or not as this will be ready for any future return to the top flight and of course help sell the club and make it look more appealing.
