Not going to West Ham?

by STAR Liaison » 19 Dec 2007 15:23

This should go in club policies or the STAR forum - but as it is about watching football when we have away games I thought it would get more response here.

STAR have been approached by Maidenhead Utd to let Reading fans not going to the West Ham game on Boxing Day know that they are invited to Maidenhead United’s local derby home game against Hayes & Yeading United (kick-off 3pm).

Any Reading fan showing their season ticket will be entitled to £4 entry instead of the usual £9, with free entry for under 16s if a Reading season ticket is shown.

Maidenhead United is located in York Road, Maidenhead – and is a couple of minutes walk from Maidenheead train station and close to the A4 and M4

I think that's a great offer from Maidenhead - and it should ensure quite a big crowd.

Depends how many want to watch Reading on TV as that will seriously reduce the numbers that may be interested in going.

Reading v West Ham is at 1pm so I'm sure local Reading fans will be able to find a boozer that's showing the RFC game and then nip along to York Road in time for a 3pm kickoff. Can't see there being a mad scramble at the turnstiles...

Whereas £41 to watch an overhyped league of prima donnas is perfectly acceptable.

Even League 2 football is £19.00 FFS

Watch it in the supporters bar, then stand on the terrace watching Maidenhead whilst drinking beer.

The Bell is usually reliable for showing games, located handily between york road and the train station, cant miss it on the corner. HTH

Stripes will be open, the supporters bar inside the ground. Free to get in and you aint paying MadStad prices for your pint. There is also The Bell pub opposite the station and a goal kick away from the ground.

Nice offer from Maidenhead but I tend to think on Boxing Day they might not get too many takers. Hippolyte has got them playing some good football but they are defensively poor; I guarantee you will see goals and I would expect them to beat H&Y for the thrid time this season.

Wax Jacket Salisbury v Weymouth for me

I was thinking of that one too but found out yesterday its All Ticket - rumour has it that the local Old Bill + 'Safety Committee' are concerned after some shennanigans during a visit from those dear neighbours of our down at Alder$h@t!

Sounds like a great initiative. Sadly I'm going to West Ham but for £4 you can't really go wrong, I've been meaning to go to a Maidenhead game as well!! I hope they do the same next year.

A cracking offer from the Magpies, however judging by the response from some people on here it would appear that football begins and ends in the Premier League and sod everyone else. Maidenhead is a cracking little club who do bloody well to punch slightly above their weight and the least some local football fans could do is go and watch a local non-league game if they have nothing better to do. £9 is a little pricey for the standard I suppose but then to be a viable business you have to try to make money but if the crowds aren't coming in then what are the club to do? At least the Maidenhead are being proactive in trying to drum up support and this offer should go some way in drumming up some more support for their cause...

That said, I'll be at West Ham so won't be able to part with my cash for them
