Naming Rights.

by Coppelled Streets » 18 Feb 2008 18:51

John Madejski must love himself so much to have not decided to sell the stadium naming rights, especially as a Premiership club that could earn a good anual fee for next to chuff all.

Money for nothing John, apart from not seeing your name around the town quite as much.

PS. Love you.
PPS. I know we also talk about this anually.
PPPS. Still love you.

Nobody wanted the naming rights when the stadium was built - or at least wasn't willing to pay a much for them.

Naming rights also become much less attractive when the stadium isn't new - i.e. it is already known by a different name, as people will continue to use the old name. Off the top of your head, tell me the name of Huddersfield's stadium, for example. Or Bradford's. The answers are NOT the McAlpine and Valley Parade.

Similarly, how many fans, if the naming rights to the stadium rights were sold to Tesco, would talk about the goings on at Tesco Stadium rather than at the Madejski?

and there's the fact that naming rights just sound shit. It'd be enough to make those who stood at elm park in the Network Southeast enclosure turn puce in anger.

it rather annoys me how fans meekly accept corporate branding and, pretentious names for new stadiums.

Arsenal fans should call their stadium Ashburton Grove
Man City fans should go to Eastlands
Sunderland fans to Monkwearmouth
Swansea to Morfa

etc
etc

And we should all be watching our football at Smallmead.

TBF, a lot of Gooners I speak to refer to their stadium as Ashburton Grove and the COMS is more and more referred to as Eastlands nowadays (I guess because it's quicker to say).

Arsenal FANS do call it Ashburton Grove. You can tell a true Gooner by that fact alone. My brother (a ST holder there) gets very irate when I call it the Emirates - and he is not alone in that.

I much prefer that to Madejski Stadium. We now play at Smallmead, I like it.

True about Man City

I still think City of Manchester Stadium sounds better though.

It's remarkable how this dislike of the egotistic money-grabbing Madejski and his appalling business acumen that's holding the club back coincided exactly with this current bad run.

I work in the sports marketing industry, so know a fair bit about naming rights deals. Unless you are a really big club (which Reading aren't), the money made from re-naming a stadium will no actually be as signifcant as you may think, especially in comparison to TV deals.

In addition, RFC are really struggling to get a good price for their shirt sponsorship deal for next season, therefore trying to organise stadium naming rights deals will be the last thing on their mind.

The 'Reading Landfill' Stadium has a certain ring to it.

Quite a few were warning of the consequences before they manifested themselves in the current bad run.

Wonder whether they have approached Chameleon PR - would appear to fit the bill on many levels, not least given the way the damn shirt designs keep getting changed to maximise profit!

there will always be those for whom any level of spending is never enough. Quite a few were of the opinion before 2005/6 that we should "go for broke" and spend big to go up, and many also saying that out lack of spending that year proved we had no ambition of going up.

I actually agree that we should have done more (and done better) in the transfer market since going up. I just don't think we should have spent money like Sunderland have done, nor am I convinced a lack of spending points to Madejski taking the money and and running.
