Island Road

by purleyroyal » 23 Mar 2008 16:52

I wasn't sure which board to post this on so I tried 'Anything Else' but no-one replied.

As it's to do with getting to a game perhaps it fits here, and someone can answer me...

I normally cycle to the MadStad but have occasionally in the past driven down.
In said past I have parked in Island Road - there's a long stretch of parking spaces down the south side of the road and it used to be very well used.
But I've noticed as I've cycled past recently that no-one is parking there.
What's happened?

Some time ago now, they changed they changed the signs and painted yellow lines, so you can no longer park there. You probably didn't notice the lines as you cycled by as they have now got a thick layer of mud obscuring them.

Personally I didn't see what the pronblem was in parking there as it is a wide and quiet and road.

Walking from the ground to the back of Gillettes (is it Bennet Road that junctions with Darwin Close near the laundry?) There were at least five cars that had been broken into, and even a Polish registered lorry that had had its window put through too.

Strangely enough......this stretch of road is notorious for getting ticketed by our traffic mafiosa (who inadvertantly, add a little bit of security for the price of a parking ticket)........they were strangely missing this week.

Don't get me started.......... oh you have............

Utterly brainless from Reading council. It's a quite street in the middle of a industrial area unused at weekends. It is just a pathetic attempt to catch more people out and fill council pockets with parking fines. The most ridiculous thing about it is that the people that used to park there will now most likely park on residential streets where they can, causing innumerable other prolems. I find it utterly infuriating that the council is trying to promote a 'green' transport policy for matchdays by simply penalising motorists. Its not as if many of us have any conceivable alternatives. I travel to games with 3 others. On the bus it would cost £16 for all of us! Plus having heard many horror stories from those who have used the buses, it hardly makes us inclined to use them. Best transport policy for football was when I lived i Vienna. At Rapid and Austria games, a match ticket was valid on all the cities public transport for a couple of hours before and after the game. As a result no one ever drove to football. Still I doubt Reading council can see past their ow greed to assess the wider picture :x

When I went to the bother of questioning the roads department..I was told it was done at the request of the local businesses and residents :?

As you correctly state, it is a quiet road, but another reason given was, that the parking restrictions would help keep two way traffic flowing........well they don't, and it is barely needed anyway.

 Typical council bullshit. i assume that by residents they're referring to the occasional bunch of gypsies who inhabit the area! None of the businesses there operate at weekends from what i've observed. In fact the one nearest the yellow lines has 2 giant slabs of concrete outside, which gives impression that it's vacant anyway. The traffic flow arguement is ridiculous. Hardly a major thoroughfare! Besides it's only for a few hours at a time. Well done for contacting them. Think I would have lost my temper. Most worrying thing is I bet they believe that what they told you actually makes sense!

On my way home I saw a car that had it's front window smashed down Hartland Road.

funny that you should mention the "travellers", on one particular Saturday (whilst errant vehicles were being ticketed in Gillette Way), the adjoining Manor Farm Road had numerous Traveller vehicles parked on double yellows (one in fact blocking an emergency vehicle access gate).naturally, they were unticketed and untroubled.

Do you think the conversation went something like this:

Cayncil: Hello Mr Local Businessman. Did you know that there are hundreds of football supporters rampaging near your property and using it for free parking at weekends?

Businessman: Really? No, I didn't.

Cayncil: Would you like us to put some yellow lines down to stop them parking here?

Businessman: ooh, yes please.

What annoyed me most about the Gillette Way thing (other than the fact I copped a ticket in a space I've been using for 3-4 years  ) was the 'stealth' tactics the Council appeared to use.

A few months before the 'new' restrictions came into force, they extended the Double Yellows at the junction of Gillette Way/Manor Farm Rd by a few metres - making more people park further back towards Morrisons. Cars started parking right up as far as Rose Kiln Lane and on the grass verges on the other side of the road from the Bingo. That's where you could find a space between what appeared to be an Articulated Lorry Dormitory!

Indeed for a couple of evening games I had to look for spaces on Boulton Rd/Craddock Rd - wasn't sure if the PC World/JJB Sports etc Business Pk was sensible to use at night with that funny raise-able ramp thingy at the entrance.

Anywho - like someone said before re mud on the road (caused by lorries/verge parking etc etc) when the Council put single yellows all the way down it was hard to spot where the 'legal' spaces where. Whats more they somewhat 'stinted' on the signs - piddly little ones a long way apart re Mon-Sat restrictions - so I parked quite innocently one Sat PM unaware of the new signs (I think they are all on the Bingo side of the road.)

Un-PC mode ON:- I might borrow the the Father-In Laws Camper van next week park where I used to and chuck a load of my kids old toys around the road just to see if they ticket me!

What's worrying me is how long before Morrisons cotton on to their 'fuller-than-usual' Car Park and start doing something about it?

I'm taking advantage of the entrance to a closed warehouse down Ache Road at the moment. It looks onto the Mcds, can't miss it. Get there about 1pm for a definite parking space but you get 4 cars in there.

Failing that, park in Greenfields Road in Whitley. There's always space, very quiet road and an alley through to the Basingstoke Road 1 minute walk from Ache Road.

Why risk your car when you have only a 10 minute walk to the stadium?

I always elect shop at Morrisons at 17.00 on a matchday.

Cannot believe that the OB do not do a stake-out at the aforementioned theatre of crime (nr Darwin Close) each matchday...........

......but hey......whats the point?.........the Crown Prosecution Service would sympathise and let the poor souls off

Anyway, if they were caught or not..........you just pay for repairing your own damaged car anyway

And suddenly yellow lines have appeared along Commercial Road and signs saying no parking Mon to Sat so yet another popular place has been done for.

However, one wonders how much of all this is down to lorry drivers having to park up to meet their driving regulations due to the fact no one seems to see the sense in building an actual lorry park - just thousands of square feet of derelict land and empty office/business buildings.

Err no its not. It is run by people we have chosen.

If you feel so strongly, why not put yourself up for election? That's the idea of LOCAL Government. But no, its easier to sit on your backside, pretend you know it all and just moan all the time.

Unless they have no real alternative, anyone who chooses to drive to the Mad Stad is a fool.

Ken is the mayor of London. The London Council elections cover and area from the boroughs of Hillingdon and Ealing in the west to Havering and Redbridge in the east.

I don't believe Reading falls within that geographic area.

Is my understanding wrong? Where is Ken's influence on the workings of Reading Borough Council?
