Am I the only one who smells a conspiracy? JM was vociferously against testimonials but he has sanctioned this one just at the point when Graeme Murty was conveniently injured, thus allowing Liam Rosenior to step up to take his place. Was it Murty's price for stepping aside? If so good luck to him. If not, good luck to him anyway.

philM
Gunny Fishcake ... No player on premiership wages needs a testimonial .

Murty's brief premiership career is almost over and he's got hopefully another 50 years to live. Also, who can say what today's wages will really be worth in 20 years time? I don't begrudge him making all he can right now.

Do you really think he's going to sit on his arse for the next 20 years.??

He is on over 500k a year you know, so is now a millionaire after 2 years in the Premiership.

He'll manage.................

This will be the last one for a good few years.
Probably the last whilst JM is Chairman.

Whether he deserves it or not is up to you.
We'll see what the fans think when the game comes around.

I think you are smelling something that's just not there. GM has been lined up to have a testimonial for a long time - in fact I think it was agreed as part of the last contract he signed. It's certainly been going to happen for a good few months at least.

And JM has been vociferously against testimonials in the past - but that was before he backed down with Parky, and I've not heard him speak against them since. In any case, I suspect him opposing them was all part of the good old JM act of "Look how much of a kind and generous, benefactor I am by changing my mind to agree with what the supporters want to do."

For 2005-2006 alone he deserves our recognition. Captain fantastic in our special season, capped off with THAT penalty.

I'll be there.

Same as you TFF!

Murty is as nice a guy as you could ever meet, always happy to talk to fans and seems passionate about the club and fans that stood by him in the tougher times.

A lot of fans should realise that we haven't always had it this good and pay tribute to those that have played through the bad times and should quite rightly step forward and take the lime light. 10 years at one club should be recognised as a genuine achievement, especially in the modern day agent/pound sign culture.

Which wouldn't include Murty as during the really bad times he was hiding in the treatment room while the rest of us had to put up with Andy Gurney. I'm not doubting his committment since or his influence (and im sure he's a very nice guy and all that) but unless all of the money to be raised is for charity I'd rather not line the pockets of a millionaire footballer.

While he's not poor I'm fairly sure he'll have spent some of his wages in the last 2 years and will certainly have paid tax in the first place

I doubt if anyone is "upset" by the news, just some don't believe its warranted for a footballer in the modern era.

Let the fans decide whether he's worth one or not.

Niall Quinn set the agenda for the modern day testimonial. 100% of the proceeds from his testimonial year went to charity and good causes.

If Murty donates the proceeds to Swings & Smiles, Royal Families and any other worthy causes, then I'm more than happy to support it. He gets the recognition and adulation, fans can pay their respects and people less lucky get some much needed help.
