Sonko Tribute Thread

by The Goat was fed » 29 Aug 2008 13:09

Seen as Sonko is off to the city of Robbie Williams, Nick Hancock and pottery it would be wrong not to give the man that brought happyness to many a decent online send off.

1. That goal against Palace.
2. Numerous hilarious clearances.
3. THAT clearance at Ipswich.
4. Some utterly incredible performances - Southampton away in the Champ and West Ham away in the prem spring to mind.
5. Playing on having just ruptured his cruciate ligament.

Sadly that injury has ruined him, he lost a yard of pace. Positionally he was never great but the physicality of him was enough to cover this. With an element of his physical presence gone he was not the same player.

Despite being a complete liability for a while I could never criticise him because of how he was before the injury. Comfortably Reading's best ever centre-back in that period. Good bit of business and I wish him well.

VIVA ALEX PEARCE.

liability at higher level
sad and glad to see him go in equal quantities

as a member of the 106 club, hell always be remembered by me
for that and the gayest voice in football

Sonko going off injured against Sheffield United last season with all the away fans singing 'wheres your Superman gone' only for him to come back on 10 minutes later to us all singing 'that's why he's Superman'

Bit gutted but a good price.

I will never forget the game away to saints, an outstanding performance & scoring at old twatford.

Over his career at Reading he has been a good player who helped us reach the dizzy heights.

Good luck superman.

Just had a call off a Stoke lad, is this for real ???

Lets lose more of squad ! hope we plan to get QUALITY cover in, as the back four are not exactly over run with good quality cover right now, as I am led to believe, the team are looking to bounce straight back up, and to do that, we need quality not "he will do" players.

Sonko's improvement and attitude over his first 3 years or so at Reading was first class, I saw his first meaningfu game when he came on as sub for Williams after about 15mins at Ipswich and he was an utter joke in all honesty. He looked absolutely terrifeid when the ball went anywhere near him. He improved immeasurably to become for me the best CB in the division when we got promoted. He was awesome that season. The first half of the Premiership season he was up and down and I thought embarassed at CHelsea (although he was up against Drogba) He got injured shortly after and after that he wasn't even close to being the same player he was. His attitude last season was absolutely disgraceful at a time when we needed all hands to the pump. He was atrocious and exceptionally lucky to get another chance, he did and again he has been a mixed bag in the first 3 games. Awful in the 1st half at Forest and then superb in the 2nd, played very well against Plymouth and then was terrible on Saturday. I haven't seen any signs really that he is as good as he was and I think we have better options available here now in the likes of Duberry, Bikey and possibly even Pearce.

£2.5million is excellent business for us and I wish him well at Stoke.

Thanks for the contribution Sonko because you did genuinely put in a massive contribution into the 2 best years following Reading anyone will see but there will be no tears here. Great business for Reading.

Bye bye Sonko and thanks for all the fish.

He was immense at times during his time here. He was also dump last year and in general after his cruciate injury.

Unfortunately almost all my memories of Sonko consist of mistakes, penalties and red cards...

I do however remember him scoring against Watford at home when we won 3-0 just over three and half years ago. He rose majestically and headed the ball in.

I also remember him colliding (and flattening) Cudicini.

For those memories I am sad. But the price is right for a defender who just wasn't good enough at the end of the day...

IF that's the case mate, and I expected that answer, how come SC has not put in Pearce from day one of the season ? if the arguement is he is good enough, and he must have had an inkling Sonko was off, or looking to leave, it would have made sense.

With Duberry out, we are not exactly covered with proven quality at the back.

Also, I think Bikey is better suited to midfield, especially if Harper goes/gets injured/continues to under perform.

6. Hoofing the ball into his own face during a 3-0 defeat at Preston.

he has been one of our best defenders in the championship this season, and would of really shone for us this season. He's not really a premiership denfender but good at championship level so 2.5 million for him is a good bit of business from hammond again.
Remember him for out jumping like 7 southampton defenders to win the ball in the championship winning season, and that headed clearance of the line, which he got his name superman from :)
good luck sonko

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing...
I said nothing can take away these blues
'Cause nothing compares...
Nothing compares to you

It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong?
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
I went to the doctor and guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said, 'girl you better try to have fun
No matter what you do'
But he's a fool...
'Cause nothing compares...
Nothing compares to you

All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
Nothing compares...
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares...
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares...
Nothing compares to you
