More verbal abuse charges?

by T.R.O.L.I. » 30 Sep 2008 14:09

Hot on the heals of Croatia being fined a pittance for their racist abuse of England players comes the following:

The Football Association has been urged to act by Hampshire police over verbal abuse directed at Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell at Fratton Park.

The force said it made the complaint about some Tottenham Hotspur fans because "it was not feasible to make arrests in that kind of huge crowd".

The FA, awaiting reports from witnesses and officials at the game, said it would "take action where necessary".

Full story

I sincerely hope the FA makes some sort of stand against this as, IIRC, it's not the first time Campbell has been singled out for vitriolic abuse from Spurs fans. Unfortunately, I can't see anything other than a warning coming

They never do specify what kind of abuse it was. Was it homophobic? Was it racist? Or was it just plain swearing like you f****** ba*****?

BBC Sport "I cannot say whether the chanting was obscene, homophobic or racist, not having been there, but the FA officer we contacted said he understood from his background experience what it was."

Any chance football clubs can stop paying for this "service" now then?

Nah - the police will end up trying to treble their costs across the board so they can "try and eradicate this type of behaviour from football"...

Obviously, those nasty nasty chants about Belsen and the like haven't upset those poor fragile Spurs fans too much, have they?

LOL @ people having so little in their lives that they see someone essentially just moving jobs from one company to a 'rival' company and take it so personally that said person becomes a 'judas c***' and gets abuse shouted at them in public.

soggy biscuit someone essentially just moving jobs from one company to a 'rival' company

A 'rival' company that, at the time, is also considerably more successful.

yeah, and that.

Whithout meaning to sound snobish I have always thought of fans that do have that mentality as being a bit, well, simple.

While you as a fan may have some ridiculously romantic notion that football is all about loyalty and the players are doing it for the City and the fans they are in fact doing it because it is their job and they are paid to. You have to be living in a seriously deluded world to take it personally that a player of a club you support moves on to another, more successful club.

If a colleague of mine left to join a competitor of ours I certainly wouldn't follow him to his new place of employment and then stand in the corner of his new office singing badly rhyming songs about his sexuality.

LOL @ the Reading fan who can't understand rivalry.

Must be sad supporting Reading, no one hates you, you hate no one, you're just basically no marks plugging along.

All the best.

The example laid down by UEFA should be applied, serious fine and suspended sentence of home games played behind closed doors.

But then we all know nothing will happen.
