Horsfield reveals cancer battle

Former Fulham, Birmingham and West Brom striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed he is suffering from testicular cancer.

The 34-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United last summer, has been forced to retire as a result and will undergo surgery next week.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I was diagnosed last Friday and I'm going in for surgery next Thursday.

"The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, but that's at the back of my mind now."

Horsfield began his career at Scarborough in 1992, and his scoring exploits at Halifax earned him a £300,000 move to Fulham in 1996.

He said: "I've had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I've played for and enjoyed it.

"But all I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win."

Horsfield has been told he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early.

"The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small," he added.

Horsfield, who finished last season on loan at Scunthorpe, had been training recently with League One Walsall.

The Barnsley-born forward has also played for Wigan, Leeds and Leicester.

Get well soon Geoff.

Wasn't Neil Harris, who scored for Milwall at the weekend, diagnosed with exactly the same a few years ago? Luckily he seems to have come through it fine.

Neil Harris wasn't quite the same player when he came back though. Mind you Bobby Moore is playing career was ok after he was treated for it in '64.

Someone I know said recently that he has given up looking at HNA? because in his words "It only takes a few posts for some pcunt to spoil a decent thread."
The case for the prosecution rests m'lud.

Perhaps - but if I had been diagnosed with cancer I think I'd feel that staying alive >>>>>>>>> retaining the same level of playing ability.

glad to hear it.

But did you know you're officially classed as a cancer survivor providing you last 5 years, regardless of what kills you? So I've been told.

You don't run with your testicles. How this can signal the end of a footballer's career is beyond me.

Chemo, surgery, recovery time, possibly more chemo? He's already 34, seems fair to say he's unlikely to return to fitness for a couple of years. Mind you, another cancer-suffering Geoff recently rode the Tour de France...

'greed Neil Harris is only two goals short of being Millwall's all time leading scorer now.

Neil Harris was 24 when diagnosed, and given the all-clear at the age of 35. Alan Stubbs was diagnosed in his late 20s. Horsfield is already 34.
