Why Reading are the most important club in England

by chandog » 29 Oct 2008 11:21

I was on a tour of wembley stadium yesterday and found out that because Reading represent Royal Berkshire we are the only club in the country that can wear their home colours (Royal Blue) in every game they play. This is an FA law and has been since the club was founded.

That poses the question of why do we need an away kit when we can wear the home kit for every match?

SpaceCruiser Is chandog on a wind up?

no honestly this is what i was told and in a way it makes sense to me
we are the club that is effectively representing royalty and that means any other team must change their kit to accommodate our blue home kit regardless of where the game is played

i guess that as this is the case we have an away strip simply to make more money

Well, Berkshire didn't officially become "Royal" Berkshire until 50 years ago, and when Reading FC were founded we were just one of many clubs in the county. So it was remarkable vision on the part of the FA to spot that we would turn out to be the only club to turn fully professional, and that the County would get renamed.

(Actually I only bothered to post because of the opportunity to include "remarkable vision" and "the FA" in the same sentence without having to put a negative in anywhere.)

without the away kit, the club wouldnt be able to rob money off the parents of kids crying because they want a reading shirt and the home shirt isnt out yet sothey have to give in and buy them an away shirt. HTH

There is perhaps a tiny grain of truth (relevance) in this legend. In the early days of the FA Cup when there was a clash of colours the older club (founded longest) got to play in their first choice. How the legend has come to be assoc with RFC I've no idea beyond our relatively early 1871 foundation/

It is believed to originate from the season that RFC chose an away strip of blue and yellow hoops. When we played an away fixture at Brighton, who play in blue and white stripes, RFC naturally had to use their away strip. The referee was uimpressed at the prospect of two teams playing in blue and ordered a change.
As RFC did not have a third strip, Brighton kindly offered to play in their away strip and an urban myth was born.
