Seems we've upped his release clause then !

I wonder how the clause works if two teams bid for Hunt and both are over 5 million. Do we get any say in which offer is accepted or could Hunt decide to join the club offering less (and presumably haggle for a bigger signing on fee....)

I'm not sure if the actual figure in his clause has ever been divulged to be honest. But, if it were £5m (as is the popular choice) and Everton bid £6m, and Sunderland bid £5m, and Bolton bid £4m then the Everton and Sunderland offers would be given to Stephen and he would be free to join whichever he chose. More fool them if Everton did bid £6m for him in that case as it would not influence the decision and would leave them £1m less that they could have tempted Stephen with as a signing on bonus.

I don't think that is the case at all. The club has to allow him to look at any offers that are over the contracted transfer fee (lets say £5M) but it isn't committed to allowing him to choose if he goes to the lowest or highest bidder. There is still an element of the club's decision making here. In the case you cite, if he prefers the lower bid to the higher one and the club (clearly) wants to go for the higher one then the discussion start in earnest. Mind you, I suspect that it is a moot point; if Everton (in your example) wanted him they'd be competing on all areas of the deal with Sunderland.

I'd imagine Sunderland would be able to offer a higher fee and better wages given the difference between their recent spending and that of Everton...

In terms of there being multiple offers I guess the bottom line is Hunt can accept or decline any of them, a selling club can't physically force a player to go anywhere. We can try and persuade but an offer of £5,000,000.01 from Liverpool or a £10,000,000 offer from Stoke ?

Hunt our for £5m Surman in for £2.5m.

Different players I know, not bad business though.

Hunt blows hot and cold even and this level and we know all too well about his shortcomings in the Premiership.

Perhaps the Pearce loan deal is us doing Saints a favour to line up a future deal.....

I wouldn't be suprised if Hunt goes and we play Kebe on the left and a combination of Murty (if ever fit again), rosenior, kelly down the right. It's not the Reading way to replace players

There seems to have been a steady stream of rumours about Prem clubs being interested in Hunt. They all have one thing in common - no substantive quotes from any of the clubs supposedly interested in buying him.

Smacks of agents working overtime to try and convince teams that Hunt is worth buying. All getting very tiresome and we are still weeks away from the transfer window opening. It would not surprise me to see one disappointed Hunt still at Reading come the end of January. He has already fallen victim to the rumour machine and we could be in for a repeat performance early next year.
