Bayern on fire

by Dirk Gently » 15 Dec 2008 16:22

Angry football fans are boycotting Keanu Reeves' new film after watching their stadium being destroyed in a trailer for the sci-fi thriller.

Bayern Munich supporters were furious when an advert for The Day The Earth Stood Still was broadcast on the club's giant TV screens.

It showed the Arena stadium they were sitting in being wiped out by aliens.

The German champions said they knew nothing of the scene until it appeared in the match-day trailer.

"We were not informed and were also not asked for permission," said the club's media director Markus Hoerwick.

"It is not to our benefit for the Arena to be represented in such a way. We will now examine whether and how we react to it."

The film, in which Reeves plays the alien Klaatu who comes to save Earth from itself, has been largely ridiculed by critics.

The Wall Street Journal said the movie, a remake of a 1951 film, was "insufferably full of itself".

But it became a box office hit on its debut weekend in North America, taking $31m in ticket sales in the US and Canada.

It marks Reeves' biggest opening since The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, the third film in the Matrix series.

And you are everything Germans would wish to be - witty, clever and attractive. Indeed - you may well be stunningly attractive but your efforts so far show us that Germans have nothing other to long for. I hope for your own sake you are stunningly attractive.

I am sure Bayern are simply rubbing their hands together though - they will simply have to be paid off. And handsomely.

Do you hear New Yorkers moaning about their city getting thrashed in a lot of films, including The Day After?

A whole city is one thing, a stadium is quite another. Try doing those effects to a Cathedral and see the outcry.

When Dr Who blew up a church in the early 70s, questions were asked in parliament.

Questions such as "Will Jo get her baps out?"

An American Football stadium (possibly Giants stadium) gets fvcked up in the trailer I've seen for this film, you don't see those fans complaining

I think Dodgers stadium gets fvcked up by a meteor in Transformers, you don't see those fans complaining

I'm sure there's plenty of other examples of sports fans not whining like pussies when their stadia get fvcked up in films, these Bayern fans should man up and grow a pair

It was outside New York.

I really wouldn't see it as 'growing a pair' tbh. If I were working for Bayern Munich, I would just be thinking of how to make money from this if indeed it is their stadium. I have to ask people at my quiz events for permission to photograph them - if I publish a picture of them without their knowing it was being taken, I can get into serious trouble. And I imagine that the examples you gave were also done 'with full permission'.

Pocketing (perhaps) a fast million > 'growing a pair'. Or wouldn't you agree?

How are the Bayern fans, who were the ones that were furious about this advert, going to pocket millions from this?

Yeah, sorry - I read an article here about this yesterday and assumed it was the same one, more or less. You're right - the fans are overreacting but I am pretty sure the article above is, also, somewhat of an exaggeration - the newspapers in Bavaria have not given this much news space.

But I also didn't say the fans would pocket millions - simply that it could be, ultimately, good for the club and all of the quotations in the article above are, after all, not from supporters but from someone from within the club.

They share but they no longer own a part of the ground. They rent, merely.

And no-one really listens to 1860 fans anyway.

I am expecting one reaction to this last comment anyway.

They do sometimes shoot films in one location and then pass them off as somewhere else in the actual film you know
