You are the Ref

by parky » 08 Jan 2009 23:10

As a referee I had this incident at one of my games the past weekend and I am just wandering what you would have done and what you believe the correct action to take.

Red Versus Blue

Red team attack and Red striker shoots from the edge of the area and Blue defender is standing on the line and trys to punch the ball away with his fist but he punches the ball into the goal. What do you do to restart the game? What do you give? and What action do you take?

You give the goal buddy. No other action to towards the person who punched the ball in.

I have no specific knowledge or authority on this, but if I was forced to make a decision I'd give the goal and book the defender for "ungentlemanly conduct" or "deliberate foul-play" or whatever it's called now

Can't disallow the goal and call a penalty (in case it's missed) but you have to punish the defender somehow.

Hang on though,if he had punched the ball clear you would have had to send him off and award a penalty kick. The fact that he was unseccessful in punching the ball clear is surely irrelevant as his intention was clear. In this instance I think you would award the goal, as you were allowing "advantage" and send him off for deliberate handball, intending to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Maybe - I suppose it was still deliberate handball. he certainly does have to be punished somehow, and you certainly can't disallow the goal.

The goal stands and the player is shown the yellow card for Unsportsmanlike Conduct its not a sending off because a sending off is denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity by use of the hand.

Another incident for you then

Red Versus Blue

Red team winning 10-0 red goalkeeper shouts to red defender to change and go in goal they change shirts as the action is up the other end Blue team then attack and the defender now in goal pulls off a great save to tip it round the post what do you do?

Send him off for deliberate handball - surely they need to notify the ref of the change.

Indirect free kick and bookings all round.

It's been a while.

That's what I'd do.

Pretty sure thats spot on, the ref needs to be notified just like when a sub takes place. Otherwise you would have defenders hand balling in the box all the time claiming that they decided they were the keeper now!

The laws (it's law 3) state that

"If a player changes places with the goalkeeper without the referee’s permission before the change is made:
• the referee allows play to continue
• the referee cautions the players concerned when the ball is next out of play"

I did a referees course bout 13 years ago now - got 98% pass but never went on and ref any games. i simply did the course to better my knowledge of the game.....i personally think footballers should be made to go on these courses, to understand the refs game better and how hard it actually is and not just about blowing a whistle!

spot on and referring to the first one it matters whether the ball goes in because the sending off offence is Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity

For my college team, the other striker was also a very, very good keeper. Whenever we conceded a penalty, he'd ask the ref if he could swap in, so he'd swap shirts with the keeper for the penalty and then we'd ask to swap back next time the ball went out of play.

Refs always used to let us and it used to annoy the other team enough so that they'd miss more than they'd score.
