who are ya? So you would quite happily watch football for the rest of your days in amongst dull, quiet atmospheres where nobody steps out of line, happy to only clap along to Blue Army?

Each man to his own. It's not the way I would do it, but if someone pays the money, and takes the time to follow his/her team around the country, then he/she should be able to support the team is whatever way he/she wants. There should not be an obligation to act like hooligans.

Reading fans hardly act like hooligans. If someone has the right to sit and act like a person made out of cardboard then surely others have the right to get up, sing and shout if they've paid their money. It's happened for years so it's not like a family going for a day out is going to be naive enough to not know that happens.

Surely this is the age divide. Without stereotyping too much, the younger generation tend to drink before a match, have banter with their mates, will usually sing and pay far less overall attention to the tactics on the pitch.

The older more studious generation will often be seem sitting down, moaning about an individuals overall performance and run / success rate, occasionally clapping, rarely standing and moaning if someone in front dares to stand.

Therein lies the rub. Ticket allocation has much to do with the lack of atmosphere on occasion. This season though we have only sold out a smattering of games so groups can move and find their own level.

I think you misunderstood me. I am someone who likes to stand up and make some noise, but if someone wants to sit down and just watch the game then they should be allowed to, at the front of the stand.

Not so bad after all

by blue_army1871 » 19 Jan 2009 16:41

I know there seems to be a loads threads on noise and atmosphere at games, many of which seem to be slagging it off.

However, on my trip to Crystal Palace vs Ipswich on the weekend i realised that Reading has a better atmosphere than first thought.

I sat in the Holmesdale End which is their main singing stand and even when the score was even oe close, there was not a peep out of anyone. Not even the Ipsh*t fans made that much noise.

Also, having been to most of our away games this season, I found that opposing fans dont make much noise at all really.

Strange that, I only live a few miles from Selhurst so I have been Palarse many a time and they normally are very vocal, even the Arthur Wait stand have been known to sing along.

Only been there twice with Urrz (2006 and 1995) both times there was a decent enough atmosphere.

+1
Depends where you sit, but I've always enjoyed the atmosphere in the East stand and think we're comparatively loud as anyone else. Even in the dim days of past with only 6-7000. :)

The alocation for the QPR game has almost sold out (3000), so there should be a good few people moaning about those standing. Hopefully a good atmosphere at the match.
Might be fecking cold though!!

Stood up for the whole game, didn't see no moaning from anyone and didn't see 1 single steward pestering people to sit down. Brilliant!

I was in Z4 half way back and despite standing all game I saw one fat grumpy old git from the second row moaning at a fan in the front row. Front row fan was obviously explaining that he wanted to stand up but fat grumpy old git was having none of it.

Perhaps if the lard arse from the second row got of his backside he may lose some of that blubber!

Grumpy old git!

Z6 say a few getting removed. Tango jacket from the Mad Stad removed 1 person after 'aving it large for around 30 mins in row D(?). I suppose the drink and the occasion was too much!

As someone who has been to the majority of grounds in this country, we are pretty much the same as anybody else, and that is regardless of the league and status of other clubs. In fact, one of the noticeable thing about our tenancy in the premiership, is just how alike most clubs in that league are to lower division sides.

What is noticeable, however, is that the 'noise' nowadays is generated by different fans than it was even as recently as 5 or 10 years ago. And the new batch of "noisemakers" are simply just not as good as the old bunch. Our loudest, most coherent and more fun away supports occur when the ex-Elm Parkers turn up in numbers. And those games are fewer and fewer nowadays.
