Champions, promotion, or by any means necessary?

by RoyalBird » 08 Feb 2009 18:48

A simple question, how would you like to see Reading Promoted? Or put in another way, what should we aim for? Imho, going as Champions is always a great thing, adding some silverware and money to the club, but I rather see the club at least get promoted back into the Premiership than chase for top spot, so would anyone be disappointed if we finished 2nd, or even if we managed to win the play-offs? Or are there some people who would prefer if we stayed in the Championship another season?

Certainly wouldn't want us to stay in this division next season as our best payers would leave in the summer.
I hope and think we will go up as Champions

Champions, no question. Can't see why anyone would want anything but, tbh. I want us to win every game.

I'd be happy with play offs, but I think I'd prefer Champions. Second place would be the "worst" of the three options- a day at Wembley seems preferable to me!

Interesting question.
Honestly, I would love to get to the premiership by any means necessary - it's where we belong.

Saying that, I wouldn't mind another season in the Championship, though. Simply because (hopefully) it would give Pearce, Kelly, Karacan, Pearce and Mooney all a chance to try get into the first team for another season.

I'm not sure if any of those could make the step up and I love watching academy players impress.

So long as the season is entertaining, I don't mind too much.

In my opinion there would be nothing more exciting than winning a playoff final sure its heartache if you lose but I would love to actually win one

Whilst in an ideal world I would like us to go up as Champions there is something to be said for the chance to see the R's at the new Wembley. In many ways that would also probably suit the club given the extra funds it would bring in and with no buyer in sight Mr Mad might well be hoping that we finish 3rd and then lose the play off final. This squad is not a patch on the 2006 group and without major investment will be in for an embarrassing season if promoted with a quick return to CCC guaranteed. Mr Mad has made it clear that he is not prepared to come up with the dosh and in the present economic climate much bigger clubs than ours cannot find a buyer.

Very little money is made from the play offs tho, JM was complaining the last time we made them about how we did not get the money from the final, or something similar.

It's contraversial, but not senseless.

We have "blooded" some great potential this season from our ranks of last season. We have bought in some further "established" potential. What chance of that happening, had Fulham not scored at Pompey last season?

Our "end-game" this year is promotion....obviously........but I have enjoyed the Championship games a darned site more than the last two seasons encounters with the petulent gods.

Impossible to cast a vote on this one

Definately not the play-offs.

We're unlikely to win them and I'll be in Barbados when the final is played - football is not big there so would be difficult to watch the game.

After the last 2 finals and the way they were lost - no thanks.

What I really want is to win the Championship but then not take the place in the PL.

The Championship is the place to be if you're a supporter - much more fun without all the hype, pampered megastars and assorted hangers-on.

and inflated costs etc etc

What a coup that would be, what a great idea and the perfect protest

The FA would be choking on their cigars and port

We're good enough to win this League.

RoyalBird A simple question, how would you like to see Reading Promoted?
Stupid question, I'm sure we all want to see Reading go up as champions... personally I would like to see us get 107 points and 100 goals, also win the FA and League cups.

To be honest, I couldn't care if we got promoted or not as long as we play exciting attacking football, win most of our home games and I have a good time.

Good point. I've been getting seriously fed up with our style of play recently - we surely have the players to offer more than the pub team hit the corners approach of recent months. There comes a point when this sort of pragmatism becomes impossible to bear.Personally,I feel the answer must be to play Matejovsky to provide some penetration through the middle and so vary the play more and make us harder to nullify in midfield. Yes, I know, he maybe hasn't yet done enough to establish himself yet but there were signs yesterday against Preston and we have to become more creative if we want to have a chance next season if we go back up. And is anyone else starting to wonder if they want to continue shelling out to watch pub football? Having said that, the way the fixtures have fallen means that things should be a tad easier from here and maybe grinding out results in the recent run of tighter fixtures was a necessary evil. God knows I hope that it is all it was...

It's still a massive money issue within the premier.

I have a mixed bag of feelings about promotion v staying in this league. The premier gives the team a higher profile, and that is noted by the amount of people within my workplace who now discuss Reading FC with me instead of the humdrum results of the top 4.
They cannot understand my mentality of possibly not being too fussed about promotion.

The championship to me is a more honest league, closer battles on the pitch, less general B/S involved. It's much more under the radar.
I enjoy going to the away games much more, not feeling constant dread of a run of losses. Obviously the win felt like a giant killing when we beat Liverpool.
As i say - mixed bag. I'm just going with the flow on this one.

I ideally would like to see us win the Championship & I think we are good enough to catch Wolves. At the same time - any means necessary will do.

If we do get promoted - this is my fear. Hoof-ball will be back in play.

I don't want us to get promoted. Ideal scenario would be to win the league and then be allowed to stay in The Championship next season.

Quite clearly there are many who favour promotion. That is the ideal scenario where SC gets his third promotion into the Premier and THE only manager to do so. In many ways we need this promotion to keep the club on track with players such as Shunt getting his just rewards for his loyalty :!: . Kevin Doyle more so.
Now if that happens do we keep:

Gunner
Ingie
Doobs
Harps.

The prem is very pacey, and i think the club will need the cash injection that SJM clearly doesn't want to commit to. He's certainly got a conundrum going on there. I have no real issues with the above players BUT three out of the four are now prone to injury and one is going to run scared in the prem if he continues to (not) boss his midfield partnerships.
