Should RFC employ girls as ball boys?

by soggy biscuit » 08 Feb 2009 11:48

Considering that boys>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>girls when it comes to hand to eye coordination, catching, throwing etc should we really have girls acting as ball boys?

Of course the PC Brigade will demand equality for all but yesterdays game saw most of the East Stand manned by ball girls and there were numerous slow returns and general poor performances from them. Anyone trying to be the best will know that it can be small margins that make a difference over an entire season and as such these young girls could be very costly.

The girls should be employed to hoover the stadium after the game and make the food in the kiosks.

Oh and to look after children in a creche type thingy.

Make that point to my daughter and your resulting shiner and sore groin will prove that some girls have both perfect hand to eye and foot to ball coordination!

Don't know which bit of the East Stand you were in but ours had boy balls at the front and, as far as I could see, they messed up just as much as any of the girls.

Blatant fishing trip, but I do think there should be some kind of assessment of their abilities before they are employed (no idea if this is already done, but it isn't evident). The ball boy in the G7 area of the West Stand yesterday was utterly useless, could barely throw the ball 2m and due to his size had to waddle before throwing the ball any further. On average, perhaps boys are better, but a better way of ensuring they are of a suitable standard is some kind of testing. Another possible problem for this may be availablity of willing volunteers, they may just have to take anyone that applies.

I'm sure that at one stage any applicants to be ball persons had to go through some sort of training process and they weeded out the poorer ones. Not sure if it's the case nowadays.

I can imagine how tough that would be.

Man throws ball to girl. Girl fumbles ball, catches at second attempt and rolls ball back to man...

PASS.

And on what evidence do you base that suggestion?!

Since the task involves catching or picking up a ball and then throwing it back to the hands of a player, it might be just as sensible to suggest that, on average, girls might be better than boys, since the skills required are more akin to netball than football and, of course, more girls than boys play netball.

ah, but in netball players are not allowed to move outside their designated area

i'd call your netball and raise you a basketball which i suspect more guys play than gals (but i doubt the lardarse ball boy from the west stand plays much of either)

Most of the females I know have issues when it comes to throwing and catching - so for that reason I'm saying NO.

They should get back to their wendy house kitchen and cook those cold baked beans served with swiss roll...

As a girl who has played many sports in my life, I am not saying that girls can't be as good as boys - I reckon I can throw and catch a cricket or football far better than most men. However, I also had many sports lessons with girls and know just how bad the majority of them are at these simple skills. The girls employed by Reading should be better than your average female, but if you took a random selection of both genders, the men would generally be better. Yes, girls do play netball, but the vast majority of netball players would only have a passing interest in football at best and therefore, are unlikely to be at football matches. There is also the fact boys are more physically mature at a younger age and so are stronger and more able to throw the ball.

I also agree with both weybridge and friday's child, this was the ballboy I was subtly referring to in my original post.

We should employ London Irish players. They can throw acurately and its the least they can do after F***ing up our pitch.

Why didn't more boys pass the test then? Seriously, I'd like to know.

They probably can't be bothered to put in the commitment.
