Long: We need a win to lift our heads
Posted on: Sat 14 Mar 2009

Despite keeping his place in the starting eleven, Shane Long was desperately disappointed after the 1-0 loss against Ipswich - another home defeat.

"I don't know what to say really. We kind of threw it away," he admitted to the waiting press afterwards.

"I thought we looked dangerous in the first half, creating a few chances and, if anyone was going to take the lead it looked like it was going to be us.

"But after half time we conceded a goal straight away and it was going to be a battle from then on.

"We just couldn't make the breakthrough. Coming back from a goal down was always going to be hard.

"They sat back and I think they would have been happy with the draw after that I'd say. But they took all three points and fair play to them."

The Royals striker was still confident that automatic promotion is still within Reading's grasp.

"I saw that Wolves won and that Doncaster are losing at home to Birmingham as we speak.

"And we've got to watch the teams below us now - we're a point ahead of fourth with a game in hand.

"But it's still in our hands. Wolves aren't in great form either - they picked up a win today, but it was only thanks to a late goal and they've been struggling.

"Birmingham, even if they go on to win this evening, are still in our grasp; we have got them on the last day of the season, which could be a six pointer.

"Getting back up into the Premiership is the goal and if we concentrate on ourselves, get as many points as we can, who knows what might happen.

"We just need that first win to get our heads lifted and kick on from there. Hopefully we can that on Tuesday.

"I think teams are going away from home looking for a point and it's not happening for us here at the moment, so we're all loking forward to an away game now.

"If we can take the three points up there and then get the same in the two away games after that, a home game probably wouldn't seem so daunting."

There is one person keeping the faith.
I admitted earlier I'm losing my faith in Reading Football Club - and reading that article hasn't changed that.
But if Long can keep the faith, why can't we?
Promotion affects the players more than it affects the fans, so if a player can keep the faith, we should too!
 I'll work on my attitude towards RFC.

It is though, as we still play Birmingham, so winning our 2 games in hand and beating them means it is in our hands.

i'll try. wish it wasnt birmingham in that second spot, anyone else but them. the only glimmer of light (i know im clutching at straws) was the first 15mins which is the best i have seen us play for a long time. two big away games coming up and im looking forward to both of them. the defence is the one area which hasnt been changed in this slump (no longer a blip!) and its about time it is. cisse and bikey cb pairing on tues? wont happen i know but both pearcey and doobs are not doing much for their cause to stay in the team currently. harps has to start again as i believe he did well (as well as he could of done). longy was impressive again in the first half so would again start with him.

Seriously, there's one of these "Let's be positive, keep the faith" la-tee-da bullshit threads after every game recently. How long should we keep the faith for? Seriously, wake up and smell the coffee.

Keep it always.
What's the point in being all critical and depressive?
It doesn't achieve anything, whereas keeping the faith means you'll always believe in RFC.
And believe me, I smell the coffee. Like I said in my first post, I'm currently not believing in Reading but I'm trying to see the positives.
 :?

Talk is cheap

If the players had that much faith they wouldnt look like a clueless bunch without an idea of how to score or a shred of confidence

Well the alternative is not to have any faith. This is football btw.

Ahh memories. They are all we need, we are a little club.
We've done our Premier League stint, be satisfied.
Anything is a bonus, we are a local club for local people.

I saw all of this coming about 2 years ago after a dire 1-0 home win against Fulham. I saw the future and it was dull football in front of passionless crowds. It's all come true, although in my personal vision, we were still in the Premiership.

I'm in the process of buying a house and saving for a wedding and added to a 450 mile round trip for every home game, I won't be able to get to as many games any more, and you know what, I'm really not bothered about it. I kept the faith through some really shit times, times infinitely shittier than they are now, but it just doesn't seem worth it any more. Inflated prices, tv dicking about with the fixtures, shit football, shit atmosphere and all for the end goal of chasing a place in the Emperor's New Clothes Premiership. I couldn't give a shit whether we go up or not. Football long ceased to be the game I fell in love with 30 years ago. I guess i knew that a long time ago but tried to convince myself, especially over the past 5 years that we were different, bucking the trend, showing everyone that there was a different way to do things, but no, the whole match day experience has just become so sterile.

This is me reaching down into the very bottom of my soul to try and find a glass half full moment out of all this. The only thing I can think of is that if we can stay 3 points or less from Birmingham going into the final game of the season. To do so, we would've had to find a little bit of form and going into that match it would be a huge boost for all the fans to know that a win will secure promotion. It would be like a play-off final so to speak but with the majority of the fans!

Mind you, you know how we do when we play teams who bring 4,000 fans, so we'll not do it and the Birmingham fans will break Reading town centre afterwards. Then we'll go on to a shock 2-0 loss at home to Swansea and lose 3-1 at their place. :x

On the bright side if they really screw up replacing SC maybe and after a few seasons of mid-table finishes or worse the spoilt Premiership fans will go back to watching Man U on sky.

If we go up I'll just be sat next to some tw*t who bought a season ticket for the "big games" anyway.

We're not Real Madrid and we are a fair distance off even being Sheffield utd so the level of delusion on here is breathtaking.
