Coppell 'Warnock's my text-mate'

by readingbedding » 19 Mar 2009 12:44

From the Chronic.

STEVE Coppell has revealed that Royals hate-figure Neil Warnock was one of the first people to congratulate him on reaching 1000 games in the profession.

Coppell became the 17th member of the elite group to have reached the milestone, along with Warnock himself, during Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.

Now ex-Palace boss Coppell is set to occupy the opposite dug-out to current Eagles manager Warnock during Saturday’s clash at Selhurst Park.

“Neil texted me on Tuesday to welcome me into the members club,” revealed Coppell. “It was very nice of him and his message was gratefully received indeed.

“It’s a big thing and the more I think about it the more of an achievement it seems. The fact Neil took the time and trouble to contact me personally was a very nice touch from him.”

But relations between Reading and Warnock have not always been so smooth.

When Warnock was at Sheffield United he fell out with Alan Pardew after the ex-Royals boss failed to shake his hand at the end of a Reading victory at Bramall Lane.

And Warnock was involved in a furious bust-up with the Royals’ bench in a bad-blooded clash at the Madejski Stadium in January 2007.

Coppell, though, insisted: “There is nothing in it. We’re just two clubs trying to win matches and nothing more.”

While the Royals have taken just two points from a possible 15 at home, they are now unbeaten in four away, including wins at Sheffield Wednesday and now Doncaster Rovers.

A trip to Crystal Palace this weekend may suit them down to the ground and Coppell may well stick with the same team and 4-5-1 formation he played on Tuesday night.

“Each game is in isolation now,” he said. “Tuesday’s result showed we can be flexible and we will have to be from here on.

"It was a big win for us and the division could have a different outlook again after the weekend. It's still all to play for."

Meanwhile Coppell, who managed Palace for over 600 games, added: “I’m going there for three points and Palace fans respect that. They realise I have to be professional.

“I have huge affection for Palace. I spent many, many happy years there and the club has a great spirit.

“I always look forward to going back but we will be looking to get a result.”

A fortnight's international break will follow this weekend's Championship matches and Coppell added: "If you win you go into it in a positive mood, if you lose the feeling can hang around the place."

READING'S final away game of the season at Norwich City has been switched to Monday, April 27 (7.45pm ko) and will be shown on Sky Sports.

LEROY Lita scored twice in Reading reserves 3-1 win against Millwall reseves on Wednesday. Noel Hunt bagged the other goal for the Royals.

I've always said Colin is a good lad at heart, he just wears his heart on his sleeve and gets carried away sometimes.

It's just football passion.

I like Colin.

What was Coppell thinking of when he gave Warnock his mobile number ?
You can imagine the endless string of texts that get fired off by Colin every time his team is cruelly cheated of a win against us....

I bet he hasn't got Wally's number.

Never had a problem with him, he is a very passionate man when he is managing a team, and a lot o the comments about officials that he makes are comments that most managers think in their minds but keep it there.

Usually because its just sour grapes bollocks.

His best one this season was after 4-1 home defeat where he bemoaned a refereeing decision (to be fair it was a pretty shocking decision ) by saying his team did their job but they lost because the officials didn't do theirs. I'm not being funny Colin but if its your job to concede 4 goals at home then i reckon I'd make a great manager.

He is entertaining though and football would be less colourful without him but i wouldn't want him anywhere near my team.

He also knows exactly what he's doing. He's built up a nice Mr Controversial image which has no doubt helped the sale of his book and ensured a nice little earner on the after dinner circuit.
You can be passionate without all the stuff he comes out with and the constant whinging and accusations aren't about passion.

Also Doncaster were very nice to Steve when we visited

http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10306~1595070,00.html

Doncaster Rovers were very generous in their praise for Steve Coppell this Tuesday evening, and Rovers Chairman John Ryan held a special presentation before the match to mark Steve's 1,000 games in management.

Rovers had commissioned a beautiful engraved silver platter as a tribute to Steve's millennium, and John invited Steve into his dining suite before kick off.

John stood before his guests and spoke glowingly about our manager for his brilliant achievements in the game, then Steve repaid the compliment with a speech of his own. Coppell gave heartfelt thanks and humourously recalled his previous visit to Doncaster in the 80s when he had to pay for the team's hotel meal with his own chequebook!

It was exceptionally kind of Rovers to extend Steve and Reading Football Club such a very warm welcome, and our manager was sincerely touched by the gesture.

not sure how many other clubs would go out of their way to acknowledge an opposition manager

He's a passionate man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
He adds humour to the league and i like him for that reason and that reason only.

He's the working class Jose.

Indeed the Donny manager was very nice to our team and Coppell.

Seems everyone else can see the barndoor obvious and gives Coppell the respect he deserves.

What a pity (a handful of) his own fans are too short sighted and [insert insult here] to see the obvious, faults or no faults :x I guess you'll always get a whacky few.

Long live The King!
