cmonurz I didn't watch the away leg in Italy, but the atmosphere at the game at Anfield was truly exceptional, with reference to those killed in Heysel, many fans of both sides sporting 'joint' scarves and flags.

I take it you didn't watch the home leg either. The TV cameras may have shown loads of Liverpool fans with joint scarves but there weren't many in the away section on show:

I didn't see that bit, if I'm honest. I was watching a European montage thing last night and it showed some Juventus fans with the joint scarves.

Still, the picture above is unsavoury, and this thread should be about Hillsborough.

David Conn (who has already uncovered a lot about this) writes about the Polic cover up :

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/apr/13/hillsborough-disaster-police-south-yorkshire-liverpool

David Conn .....
In a dusty library at the far end of the Houses of Parliament, among 10 boxes of documents relating to the Hillsborough disaster which were made available by the South Yorkshire police following a government order some years ago, is a statement from a police constable on duty that day.

On the front page is a handwritten instruction from a more senior officer. "Last two pages require amending," it notes. "These are his own feelings. He also states that PCs were sat down crying when the fans were carrying the dead and injured. This shows they were organised and we were not. Have [the PC] rewrite the last two pages excluding points mentioned."

The Daily Mail’s Steve Curry was on SSN this morning. He too, was at Hillsborough and appeared before the Taylor Inquiry.

During it, he chatted to an officer from the West Midlands investigative force, who admitted to being totally ashamed of the actions of his South Yorkshire colleagues. Laid no blame with the Liverpool fans.

20 years ago tomorrow 96 fans went to a cup-semi and never returned.

Was only 3 at the time and since read various reasons as to the cause of the tragic events (mostly fingers pointed to the Police organisation or lack of it..) which could be debated forever but those people who lost their lives did not deserve to in any way as they just went to see their favourites in action and they should be remembered.

R.I.P

I don’t think you could post a more Scouseesque post if you tried. First of all you LIE and make Anfield out to be a great theatre of wallow and self pity where Liverpool and Juve fans unite in their grief. Then, when confronted with the truth that the Juve fans have not forgiven Liverpool fans and when Liverpool tried to hold a minutes ‘joint grief’ silence the Juve fans turned their backs and stuck their fingers up (and rightly so), you brush Heysel under the carpet and say that this thread is about Hillsborough.

Well you know what cmonurz, it was about Hillsborough until you brought Juve into it, all I was doing was correcting you ill-informed post.

Lets get back to Hillsborough now though and remember those 96 who went to a football match and never returned, no one deserves that.

Since when did I go under the name 'Terminal Boardom'?

And no 'lies' here, TMD, the pictures you posted are shocking, and not what I remembered of the tie, although as I said, I didn't see the away leg. I've never had any problem being corrected, and thank you for doing so (and for contradicting yourself in first claiming I lied, and then claiming I am ill-informed).

Does anyone else think that it's ridiculous that there will be a minute's silence at the FA Cup Semi on Sunday between Everton and United? 40,000 from each of the two sides that hate LFC the most and a 4pm KO meaning lots of BOOZE time before. Clearly a few idiots are going to shout stuff out.

I would like to think Everton fans wouldnt be quite that insensitive. Remember, although this tragedy was at a Liverpool FC game, it affected the whole city (and country). However, you are right, only takes a few idiots to ruin it.

Memory from that day - being at a friends birthday party that evening and her dad returning from the game unharmed (physically). I was only 6, but will never ever forget that.

Listening to the accounts of the survivors taking coats off the dead to use as slings to carry them away onto the pitch was sobering. The Police not having a clue what was going on and assuming theft was taking place. Crisis managment at it's worst by the OB.

I don't think you'll find many Everton fans that actually hate Liverpool. It's one of the better rivalry relationships in the game. And I'm sure most of that 40,000 in blue will have lost someone they knew or loved at Hillborough!

Absolute rubbish. There is an huge amount of animosity between the red and blue supporters of the City. Yes there’s still a certain mingling of fans during the Derby, but only within family groups and close friendships. Nothing like the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Where there’s a difference between Liverpool and a city like Glasgow, is that it’s doubtful the inter-club rivalry will spill over into the Hillsborough tributes. Very few from Merseyside, were directly or indirectly, unaffected by the tragedy.

There were 'justice for the 96' banners at Everton v Villa.

No, not ridiculous. I think it's entirely appropriate, especially given Everton's participation. Not sure how old you are Aggers, but I recall the bond that developed between Everton And Liverpool after Hillsborough.

You're probably right about United fans shouting stuff out, but that probably says more about them than the idea of the minute's silence itself.

I think the majority of Everton fans do hate Liverpool FC, Gerrard etc. But as a football rivalry. When it comes to 96 innocent lives of people in the community, football rivalry is rightly so, quite insignificant.

What planet are you on Jay? Totally incorrect.

Many, many blue-noses hatrid stems from Heysel and the subsequent ban on English clubs in Europe because it denied them of a European campaign after they won the league. Indeed, many will bore you to tears that the subsequent break-up of their squad was also down to the fact they (and everyone else) were not allowed to play in Europe
