Wax Jacket why is anyone sticking up for the north? it's so bad even Jay left

Not sticking up for them but Man Utd, Liverpool, Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle etc DON'T need to be handed free flags or clappers to generate an atmosphere - especially in the big games!

Did I not see on Match of the Day recently that free scarves had been handed out to all Newcastle supporters for them to wave around at the game? Pretty sure that's happened at Old Trafford either this season or last as well.

People have been going to Anfield (for example) and watching 'big' matches for decades, but that isn't the case at the Emirates or Eastlands so people at these newer stadia need encouragement - as they do at Stamford Bridge where success is only a recent phenomenon.

I don't buy that you get better or worse atmospheres at Northern grounds in general - is it noisier at Brammall Lane or Fratton park? Ewood Park or St Marys..?

Stoke 'won' noisiest Premier League ground this season, but I'm pretty sure Reading were right at the top of that survey during the first year in the Premier League (with no clappers or rumblestix that I can remember).

Oh I suppose grounds with more common people in them have more shouting which could also help explain the Anfield/Emirates differential.

Putting YNWA on the PA system and waving a couple flags does not consitute a good atmosphere to me.

Ask any visiting fan at Anfield-apart from games against Man U, Everton or those "legendary European nights" the atmosphere is rubbish

WRONG!
Toon Army were given free scarves which they gaily waved about to create that 'continental' atmosphere...

1000 scarves given to fans in a game against Portsmouth

Since when was Newcastle v Portsmouth classified as a "big game"

The point of the post, as i keep saying, is that BOTH Arsenal and Chelsea gave out free flags before a Champions League Semi final, massive game, to help generate support & atmosphere. The likes of Newcastle, Utd, Liverpool etc dont need to be forced into generating an atmosphere

Agreed?

who gives a f*ck?

this is just the same old "Reading fans are sh*t" thread just with a different slant

I've heard the legendary (to some) man city away support do f*ck all - and 100 fans from Cambridge Utd make a racket so it's all bollocks.

(But tbf Chelsea and Arsenal are glory hunting c*nts so it's been a good week )

United handed out a free scarf as part of a pack that everyone got for the 50th Munich anniversary.

Thats fair enough but the reason WASN'T to help generate an atmosphere, was it?

Same for every ground. All seating has ruined atmosphere's at football. It's a lot more comfy, pleasant, family orientated, nice... call it what you will. And as a result, far less boisterous and enjoyable.

No, what game did we need to hand stuff out to generate an atmosphere?

i.e, what big game would have had no atmosphere if we hadn't handed something out?

You're missing the point

The club obviously felt the atmosphere would be shite, else why would they spend all that money giving all the fans a fcuking clapper???! - if it was that good, we wouldn't need a clapper to generate noise as we'd do it with our voices.

in which case they are pretty stupid then. It's like playing a bit of music over the PA system after a goal, thinking it'll improve the atmosphere - it's at the exact time when the atmosphere doesn't need any kind of boost.

Overall, despite protestations to the contrary, while our fans aren't ever going to win votes as the most rabid hardcore bunch, I doubt we are any worse than average. I don't go to as many away games as I used to, but it's not often I leave an away game impressed with how loud the home crowd were. And judging by the number of rubmblestix etc seen regularly elsewhere, such ideas are hardly unique to Reading.
