Good game last night... Clarets Fan is back

by J50 » 13 May 2009 17:02

Hello... I said I'd be back come win or lose. I think you were unlucky over the two legs, certainly looked the better team last night up to the goals, and by half time I was beginning to think we would be playing our last game of the season.

Thought Riley the ref was poor, made the play too stop start and seemed to blow for strange decisions (both ways) - in particular the accidental handball by our gk outside the box! It was never handball as it ricocheted back on him, but if you give it as handball then it is a red card; I guess Riley makes his own rules up.

The goals killed you off though, and it was all over - but there is always hope, and it was disappointing to see your fans start to leave with 30mins left. As usual the 'fans' who like a bit of aggro came over to the divide in the corner but fortunately it came to nothing as the stewards and police stepped in; I was four seats from the divide and there was plenty of anger over there but it was all a bit silly and unnecesary. Someone wasn't thirsty as they lobbed a bottle over to us which hit someone in our crowd. You outsung us in the first half which was in line with the action on the pitch, but after the first goal the singing competition was all over (bar the shouting).

It was always the first goal that would make the difference and although you never really troubled Jensen there was some decent forward play in the first half from you. We were poor going forward, nobody seemed to want the ball and it looked like we were playing for 0-0 on the night. Overall by virtue of scoring 3 goals and defending so well I guess we just about deserved to win over two legs, but we'll need to up the game for the final, hopefully back to some of the great performances that we have put in this year in both league and cup games.

Best of luck for next season; I hope we don't play you next year but who knows what will happen on the 25th of May!

We probably still wouldn't have scored if we'd be playing now. I think the better team lost, but that's football. You don't win games if you can't score goals. That said, you guys defended bloody well and they were two cracking goals so i don't want to take anything away from that.

Good luck in the Final. I hope you beat Utd.

Hi J50

That post is far to rational for this list.

Good luck in the final.

A very reasoned and level headed argument. I enjoy discussing the game with opposing fans, I just wish numptys didn't exist.

I have to say we have been very unlucky at home in this run and last night typified this. It's rare you'll concede 1 goal like that in a match, let alone 2. Paterson should have been closed down and Rosenior should have headed it away properly, but even after that I never expected them to fly in. I was actually saying "Go on, shoot" when Paterson was on the ball, thinking we'd get possession back and launch again. It's mad that the only shot Burnley had from inside the box was Elliot's volley that hit Tabb, but they still got 2 goals.

However despite all our pressure in the first half we didn't seriously test Jensen and it didn't look it was a matter of time until we scored. We may have played some pretty football over the 2 legs but Burnley got the job done and deserve to go through. I know we're trying to be nice to Coppell right now, but taking Matejovsky off when he did was criminal and we looked poor without him on the pitch.

What I would say to Burnley is that Kevin Blackwell and Sheff Utd won't be losing any sleep over your performances over the 2 legs. In the first leg you won because of Bikey's stupidity and never threatened before that. As for last night, goals like that don't come along every week. You can play better than you did against us. You've done it many times this season. If you want Premiership football next season you're going to have to turn it back on, Sheff Utd have confidence and won't be wasteful as us. I'd rather see you go up than them, Chris Morgan is a thug after his stamp on Mawene and they don't play football as well as you can. However a vast improvement will be needed on Burnley's part.

Fair assement. Hope you have a great day out at Wembley. Think you might just shade it over the Blades. Will watch with interest. Good luck

Good luck in the final. Hope you win - more honest bunch of footballers than Warnock, no sorry Blackwell, could ever produce.

J50 Someone wasn't thirsty as they lobbed a bottle over to us which hit someone in our crowd.

I saw that get thrown at the Burnley fans. The bloke who got hit straight in the face from 20 yards didn't even see it coming. It was half full and had a lid on it I think. "oooooh thats gotta hurt"

J50 - a very fair and thankfully non gloating assessment of a game that had so much riding on it. Great to see a rteasoned and logical post which is far better reading than some of the crud written by our own support. Excellent goals, and though painful to watch from this side of the fence were both quality which is something to appreciate.

Enjoy your day at Wembley.

Sheff Utd should be fearing us after we've beaten them twice already this year, and they know that we can play a lot better than that. One thing to add, I thought making the triple substitution after our first goal was ludicrous. It sent out signals of panic and you duly obliged, when a more level headed approach and maybe just one sub initially might have got you back in the game.

I think Shef Utd will turn you over without even breaking into a sweat, will be rooting for Burn-a-ley though.

J50, behind all the way. Burnley in the 70s brought through loads of young talented players

Just beat Sheff Utd and all will be forgiven.Your side appear to be a tight well marshalled unit with spirit and given some quality aquisitions could hold your own if you make it to the FTSE league as we did for a while.
Unfortunately for us our synergy evaporated with a few inflated egos thinking they just needed to turn up and mince about the place and its our time to regroup and clear out the deadwood who think 2nd gear is ok .
Anyway I know a few Burnley fans and am chuffed for them albeit miffed at our cost but bottom line is we deserve bu99er all from this season so good on yers.
We`ll be back mind you heard it hear first!

In agreement, a fair assessment. In total control the first half, but never in a month of Sundays looked like scoring. Over the four games I think on balance of play we deserved to win all 4 of them, so to come out with only the one win is a bit gut wrenching. Absolutely gutted with the nature of the goals because that was one of only way you were ever going to score, and it completely knocked the stuffing out of us. Hats off for trying them, but they won't happen every game. And Brien Jensen's goal, as you well know, led a very charmed life in the games up at Turf Moor. If you play anything like you did against us against Sheff Utd, they'll eat you for breakfast. League results count for nothing in the playoffs (just ask Tranmere).

Through gritted teeth, well done. Goals win games, and we got none, so you deserved to win on that score. I can't say I'm rooting for either club in the final as I've got no real care for either Sheffield Utd or Burnley. I'll look on in non-partisan mode.

Good luck in the final (if you have the sort of refereeing luck you had against us then you'll have no problems!)

Thanks for the various comments. Hands off Coyle!!! Anyway, I doubt he'd want to drop a division...
