CL/European Cup Quiz

by Starfish » 26 May 2009 10:19

Tonight I will host a CL/European Cup Quiz in an English Pub here in Nürnberg. It's a full evening 50 Question Quiz - 5 rounds of 10 questions. It's supposed to be fun too (because I am so charming and stuff - this is my job, after all). The first 6 questions have a,b,c,d choices - the other 4 are open questions.

Anyway, here is Round One (no cheating allowed TBM!) - I will post the answers at about 11.30. It is relatively difficult but I suspect there will be quite a few people present tonight who will have studied (and there is one team from Kicker Magazine coming, for example). There will be a couple of German-related questions which will be a bit tough too - forgive me. If you love this, I will put up the rest of the rounds gradually through the day and let you know tomorrow how many points the winning team have.

1. What is the name of the French journalist from whose idea the European Cup stemmed?
a) Cédric Anger
b) Pierre Ballester
c) Thierry Gilardi
d) Gabriel Hanot

A German Question - sorry!
2. Which German team was the first to represent Germany in the competition?
a) Fortuna Düsseldorf
b) Rot Weiss Essen
c) Hannover 96
d) Schalke 04

3. He was born in Buenos Aires in 1910 and died in 1997 in Venice. From 1958 - 1960, he was trainer of Barcelona (also from 1980-81), he trained Spain for the World Cup in Chile in 1962 and from 1960-68, (and again in '73/'74) he was trainer of Inter Milan and in this reign, Inter won The European Cup twice (and they haven't since). What is his name?
a) Alfredo Foni
b) Helenio Herrera
c) Juan Carlos Munoz
d) Jorge Valdano

4. After Real had won the first five European Cups, Benfica became only the second team to win the title in 1961. Who did they defeat in the final 3-2?
a) AC Milan
b) Athletic Bilbao
c) Barcelona
d) Inter Milan

5. Who was the first trainer to win the European Cup with two different clubs (Ottmar Hitzfeld was the second)? He won his first title in 1970 with Feyenoord.
a) Ernst Happel
b) Udo Lattek
c) Rinus Michels
d) Nereo Rocco

6. Who is the only player to have won The European Cup 6 times (with Real)?
a) José Araquistáin
b) Alfredo di Stefano
c) Francisco Gento
d) Héctor Rial

7. Manchester United's famous air crash in Munich in 1958 happened after United had defeated which team in The European Cup quarter-finals?

8. In which city did the first ever European Cup take place?

9. The current trophy has been awarded since 1967. What was the first team to win it?

10. How many teams from Germany have played in the European Cup/Champions League final since 1956?

Nice and easy then!

Without looking up or guessing i think i would only get 3 or 4 of those.

Herrara is the manager in Q3.

Q5. Ernest Happel coached Feynoord to the 1970 Cup, so him.

7.Man Utd were returning for Yugoslavia i think. Partisan Belgrade?

9.Celtic won it in 1967 for the current trophy.

Hope for a bit more luck in the later rounds!

Thanks for the feedback. It is difficult, I know but there will be 4 people on a team. And, I suppose it is only natural that the later rounds will be easier. As I said, I will only post the answers a bit later.

3 depends entirely on who the club is and which league they're from.

The prize money for the Champions League final winners is something like 7 million Euros. However, for simply being in the CL, a team like Manchester or AC mIlan can get in excess of 20 million Euros simply for playing 6 games and perhaps losing all 6.

4 Roma

5 Messi

6 Dunno. Think it a trick.

7 Too many

8 lost when they had already qualified to Donetsk
