Why are Portsmouth selling so many players?

by barmy_army008 » 04 Aug 2009 21:40

Genuine question - why have they having to sell so many players? I thought they were being bought by the guy who sorted out Manchester City's takeover i.e. someone with loads of money. Or if that hasn't happened they're still own by Gaydamak aren't they? And he has loads of money as well.

Could someone enlighten me?

To quote Peter Storrie (Pompey exec chairman) from this article on the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 183075.stm

"Until this takeover happens, neither the old nor the new owner is placing any money into the business,"

"The business has debts to pay and the banks are not releasing funds, so this leaves the club with no option but to sell to keep going," said Storrie.

"I agree we need new players, a stadium, but we can't do it without finance and we've had none of this for more than nine months."

Thay are an example of how a club should not be run. Short term success equals long term failure. Strong candidates to go down this season.

Pompie in a mess!! They are lucky Newcastle are in such a mess or everyone would be laughing at Pompie

No money, the deal with the arab is still not completed and has hit some snags

They have to pay £36m to the banks before the end of the month, new owner or not,so they need cash from players to cover the debt.

Now their players are fighting in their hotel in Portugal

Pompey star Nugent hit by lump of wood

Players step in to break up brawl

Two ordered home and fined by manager

Crisis club Portsmouth sunk to a new low after two of their players fought each other in a brutal hotel brawl during a pre season trip to Portugal.
Striker David Nugent was allegedly hit across the legs with a lump of wood by defender Marc Wilson during the fight. The amazing bust up took place in a corridor outside their rooms and was witnessed by team mates who stepped in to prevent it from getting any worse.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, hours after Pompey had been crushed 4-0 by Benfica in a pre season friendly.
Both players were immediatley sent home by boss Paul Hart

The shameful scenes are the latest setback for the club who have sold Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson and also lost Sean Davis to Bolton - and there are also rumours that Sulaiman Al Fahim is about to pull the plug on his proposed takeover.

David James now is not the David James of even 5 years ago.

I did read an interview where he basically reached a certain age and went "Hmmm, I could have done so much more with my career"

I think it says more about Jay being unable to move on from one or two stupid and poor seasons tbh. James is a very good keeper.

LOL @ the Pompey fan on here a month or two ago telling us how much money they had and how we're more in danger of going bust than they are!

'greed. They were so full of optimism, but now every one of them here that I've spoken to thinks Administration or relegation is looming.
