Rickie Lambert to Saints

by handbags_harris » 10 Aug 2009 13:41

Just been reported on BBC 1 o'clock regional news that Rickie Lambert has moved to Saints for £1 million+. Haven't ever seen him play, is he one for a higher level, and subsequently one that maybe we've missed out on?

Very highly rated. That's a good catch for Saints. He could have stepped up to the Championship though I'm sure.

He's slower than Boris.

Did Shearer have pace? Did Sheringham have pace? Did Les Ferdinand have pace? Closer to home, did Kitson have pace? Did Morley have pace? Did Jimmy Quinn have pace? I rest my pace!

I imagine if Rodgers had wanted Lambert he would have gone out and got him.

Don't know anything about him really other than he was top scorer in the world last season (er, pre-Christmas.) Wonder how many Long would get in League 1...

They all had enough pace to get themselves into space. He isn't quick enough to spear head out 4-3-3 formation, and if he was good enough, we'd have signed him.

Would we? What if he didn't want to come to Reading? There are a lot of other players who are good enough but we haven't signed...

I'm fairly sure he'd have preferred Reading to a Soton team on -9 points in the league below.

Yes he probably would, hypothetically speaking. But what happens if we approach to sign, and another similarly sized club then bids as a result? Say - Cardiff? You speak with absolute certainty that he would sign if we approached, which is a slightly naive attitude if you ask me.

What I meant was that if Lambert was good enough for our level we would have gone in for him, and if it was a choice between us and Soton I'm 99% sure he'd have chosen us.

Again, would we though? I openly admit I know very little of the player except that he scored shedloads of goals and came only 2nd to Simon Cox in the scoring charts last season, but isn't it well documented that Rodgers likes a player with the right attitude as well as the ability? I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that we would have gone for him if he had the required ability. Jermaine Beckford has the required ability for Championship football, will we go for him?

MiniRoyal The apparent lack of interest from any Championship side suggests that he might not be quite as good as some on here would have you believe.

I agree with this person. Whoever he is.
