Barry the bird boggler Ashley Cole

Are you an idiot? Whatever you think about him as a person, he's been one of the most consistent performers for England since he came into the side.

My shouts would be Ricketts, Kevin Richardson, Seth Johnson and Franny Jeffers

Steve Bull did alright for England, definitely scored a few goals, including a couple against Scotland IIRC?

Gus the teenage cow
PlasticRoyale err... Gary Neville was the first choice right back for the team that dominated the premiership

You rate him, do you?

as a right back, I don't think there's been many better

4 goals in a couple of handfuls of games around 1989-1990. Kind of like the record someone like Vassell ended up with. Never a first choice striker but useful in the squad.

I was there - half the away end was Wolves. Always nice to beat the sweaty's in their own back yard.

Definately the worst player to put on an England shirt was me. 1990 Fanzine 5-a-side compo. I sucked donkey's dick that weekend.

Oh, and what AP said - Ireland have given donkeys hundreds of caps. There is no way someone like Stephen Hunt would get anywhere near 30 caps for England if he was English. The fact remains that England, 98% of the time, select their players on merit when they are either in the form of their lives - see James Beattie around the time of his caps - or actually showing consistent potential to become a regular first teamer at a young age - extreme case Wayne Rooney. Most of these deserve their chance, and are actually very good top level club players, and still go on to produce the goods at club level after their initial cap - see Darren Bent. Occasionally you get a bad egg - see Michael Ricketts - but even he was selected on the back of some magnificent form for Bolton after scoring 24 Division 1 goals to help get them promoted, and then by scoring 15 times by February in the Premier League. I think it's harsh to call players who were selected on merit donkeys. It's pretty clear to me that Gus has an inferiority complex as Ireland obviously have a much smaller pool of players to call upon, hence why they select more donkeys than England. IN a nutshell, England can pick and choose, Ireland can't.

'greed but a bit of perspective puleeze

why would i have an inferiority complex about the fact that you have much more resources, a much larger pool of players to choose from and a much larger population?

that so many of you seek to hammer home the point that you have better players than ireland and a better chance of winning the world cup than us when that is blindingly obvious is worrying indeed-shirley you have more pressing concerns

oh and just for the record england haven't beaten ireland in about 30 years, we're unbeaten in 5 against you, the best players don't always make the best team

denmark win euro 92

greece win euro 2004

bulgaria in world cup semi 94

croatia in world cup semi 98

korea/turkey in world cup semi's 2002
